Does such a thing exist? *SFF experts*

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, I was looking thru some of the awesome rigs in the Beastly mATX/ITX thread, and I was pondering something.

While I don't like the price tag or alienware in general, looking at how the dual slot GPU is mounted parrallel instead of perpendicular to the motherboard was interesting to say the least, on the alienware x51.

I was wondering if there is a sff, slim or matx/itx case out there similar in design in regards to the GPU, or would I have to go custom?

Could be modded using riser cards or PCI-E ribbons smile.gif

Cool, just found what you were talking about regarding the extension PCI-E ribbons. But for the dual slot holes I would have to do modding to something existing. BTW, any drawback to using those riser/ribbons?

There are server cases that does this.
You may want to look into that.

Armour posted one in a thread about someone fitting a pc in a suitcase not too long ago.

As for the risers/ribbons, there's no performance hit. It's just a very large parallel copper extension.
What may be of concern, however, is durability. PCIe ribbons, especially can be troublesome. Some can be of cheap construction.
If going with a ribbon cable, make sure you buy a shielded one.

The ribbons can be problematic, I saw a thread where somebody used one for a sound card and had all kinds of interference with it. He tried to shield it himself with aluminum foil and it helped, but wasn't perfect.

This is a briefcase build, he used a right angle adapter (not a ribbon) and it seems to have worked out nicely.

Interesting, i'll start looking for server cases that have this, I was hoping for small rather than server size (big) unless not all server cases are E-ATX.

They do make them but you are usually limited to a Pico-PSU.
This one is the closest you'll get to what you want. Link

You can probably mod in a larger power supply but it will be a lot of work and won't be fun.
The other option, and my prefered choice, is to make your own custom case.

This is a rough layout of what you want (and what alienware used). I'd go even smaller into 1U PSUs and Flex-ATX but then you're getting into really proprietary stuff and it just gets more complicated.

If you get a card with side power plugs (usually reserved for mid-range to entry level cards) then there are some options for you but even those are iffy.
The last option is this
It will take only a slight amount of modding to get everything you want. At 3.5" tall it'll definitely fit in your suitcase. There are some caveats related to this case though.
1) You're CPU cooler height will be limited.
2) You're going to need a 1U PSU and that takes some research. If you want to use this case I can help with that further.
3) It's a bit expensive for what it is.
4) You're going to definitely need research when purchasing this case.
Other than that, it's a great case and the quality is very good.

Kinda has the idea, but checking both threads/websites, it would probablyl have to be custom, might make it out of wood if i can get the materials.
