[BBC] Best Buy rocked by profit plunge - Page 15

I wish had had a Micro Center nearby. Alas, I do not. Amazon is not an option, as they operate in my State, it's got to be a great sale to beat out the sales tax.

legally you have to pay those taxes every April. This isn't the magic loophole everyone thinks it is, and even that is rapidly closing. Plus many people, myself included, are willing to pay a bit extra to have it immediately rather than waiting 3-5 days for shipping.

I found that I didn't use prime enough to justify the costs, the streaming content was 'meh', but the occasional free ebook was nice. All in all, not worth it for me. I let it expire recently. You can weasel* your way into ~1.5 years of free shoprunner (prime for newegg + other sites) if you sign up for the free trial. I find that Neweggs prices usually beat or at least match amazons, and sometimes you can get freebie deals too.

*in case anyone is interested in how I did this I'll post instructions
  1. sign up for the free trial. you have to enter your credit card information. If you don't cancel before the 30 days is up they automatically charge you a full year. You're not going to let this happen. Order something during this period. I ordered $2k worth of pc parts thumb.gif
  2. Before the trial is over, go to the shoprunner website and start the cancellation process. You will get interupted with an offer for a 90 day extension. they will state that they will not automatically charge your cc after the 90 days is over. Accept this will glee
  3. If you place 3 orders within that 90 days you get a full year for free. they will probably automatically renew your membership after the year is up, so pay attention to that.

Yep, I used to work there as an agent. The craziest thing was the emotional dissonance. I know I was ripping people off. Not only that I had to fix computers out where the line was and about every 5 seconds someone would go "hello, excuse me, can I get some help?" I'm sitting there trying to troubleshoot a software problem (yes I gave a **** and was there to learn and help people not just reformat and backup) and I coudnt concentrate on anything. Stupid management.

Aside from what I said before, I have to give BB kudos for having such cheap music when I bought 5-6 CDs recently. Literally nothing could touch them. Everywhere, including Amazon and other online retailers wanted $14 minimum for each one, some more, not including any shipping. With shipping averaged into the total of the CDs, the average per CD was somewhere around $12.

I'm not averse to them restructuring and pulling their heads out of their asses, but BB in it's current incarnation can wither away without a tear here. Hopefully my experience with the CDs are a sign of things to come, however.

It's a very special place for me. I kind of hate that Amazon is doing so well, it's not the same experience for me. When I build my friends or clients computers, I order from Newegg. For my personal builds, Microcenter. So if I have to pay 10 bucks more for Ram, so what. I get what I need right now, and i can return it instantly if I want to, no questions asked. To me I like the browsing experience.
So again, if it will keep their lights on, I'll gladly pay the extra cost.
As for Best Buy, I hated them. All the Salesmen gang up on you, and unlike MicroCenter, they know next to nothing about computers OR home cinema. The store is a joke. I work at Sears on the side selling TV's, and it's shocking to me how many customers are lied to at Best Buy. Customer comes in, wanting Monster cables. IO show him a cheap brand, and he looks at me like I am stupid. "Monster cables are better" Im like, ok, bring yours in, well hook up two of the exact same TV's and see which one has a better picture" Even after all that, he still believed that the monster cables will last longer somehow. Sad.

I'm totally with you on really like Microcenter but there in store people will try to sell you stuff you really don't need. I've noticed with PSU's especially they are really bad. I had a 700watt PSU with my old CF 5850 set up and I was a little nervous about it and I was just chatting with the dude in there and brought it up. He was totally trying to convince me I needed a 1k PSU or it'd blow. Yeah I'm not stupid man.
