Help OC i7 920 with DDR3 1333 to 3.6~3.8Ghz - Page 2

For whatever reason, many people have trouble mounting the stock cooler.

Are you certain yours is attached correctly and snapped down securely? What about TIM?

yes i rebuild the turret and cleaned all so now im gonna test it on "default" bios settings.

Edit. When i run Intelburntest on any mode it goes to 97ºc / 97ºc / 94ºc / 97ºc when starts never reach 98 and tests succeed but idk.. this is without overclocking, just defaults:

Can i overclock it still? T_T Btw this guide says that the safe zone is bellow 100ºc:

oh god... you never said you had the stock intel cooler, that thing isnt made for overclocking, you are going to end up killing your CPU / motherboard before starting to do anything.

i would suggest you forget about overclocking that thing until you get yourself at least some budget cooler that would allow you to overclock further. the Cooler Master Hyper 212 evo is around $30 to $35.

Hm so is that a nice cooler? will i be able to OC to 3.6-3.8 with no problem?

Ambient temps are very important and the i7-920 starts to make a lot of heat at 3.6 and above. You could just shoot for 3.0GHz until you understand more.I have the P6 and a i7-920 and easily reach 4.0 following the guides here,I do use water for cooling though.

Yes, that's a good cooler. 3.6-3.8 should be np if your chip is decent.

My chipset is: Intel Tylersburg X58, Intel Nehalem

Anyways i dont know why im gettin 97ºc max temp on any test (prime95, IBT) when other reviews of 920 stock gets maxs of 77~80ºc. And i reach 97ºc in above 1 sec after starting the tests! T_T and temps in idle are on 55~65ºc this is insane frown.gif

What coolers do u recommend me? ;_; (cant get any water cooler due to space)

Please do not run prime on a stock cooler. The 212 Boyd linked is a solid cooler, I'd go with that. But make sure you have space in your case. If you're experiencing high temps try cleaning dust/re-apply thermal paste.
What case do you have?

Also, by chip I mean your CPU. Every CPU is different, so overclocking results may differ from eachother.

But on reviews they use prime on stock, thats why i tried to compare temps.. Anyways i cleaned my pc today (exhaustive cleaning) and reapplied thermal, do u think that maybe is another thing? or cooler is just breaked o_O

My case is NZXT - Guardian 921 RB - Black Steel Midtower
post #20 of 26
Stress-tests doesn't represent real-world usage. Stock-coolers are designed for keeping your CPU at acceptable temperatures - nothing more; nothing less. Running Prime on a stock-cooler is therefore not a good idea, especially when you're hitting 97 C. I would not think too much about it.

According to this review: http://www.cluboc.net/reviews/cases/NZXT/Guardian921/Page3.asp the cooler should fit. I'm not sure if the Evo 212 is bigger than the original CM 212.
