I've been reporting this on the catalyst feedback forum and *****ing about it on Rage 3d for a years now. Same thing with Darkplaces and most opengl source ports for that matter. I'm not getting my hopes up.

Rockstar simply doesnt care about pc gamers.
Throw GTA away and buy Saints Row The Third, that game will surely give you 60 FPS or higher

No, its an AMD issue. You used to be able to fix the performance issues by disabling Catalyst Al which you can't do anymore. If you roll back to an earlier version of GTA 4 it also runs much better. From what I hear its due to what ever driver optimizations AMD has in place for earlier versions of the game. Of course that is somehow rockstar's fault. rolleyes.gif

I've come to accept that this will never get fixed.

1) Go to your program files for GTAIV in Steam.
2) Find the LaunchGTAIV exe and make a shortcut to it.
3) Right click on the shortcut, click properties, add to the target at the end "-norestrictions"

That fixed the issue for me.

The game has issues with more than 2GB of vram. There are workarounds. Thats a different issue than what is being described in this thread.

Strange the game was working alright on my AMD rig, I was getting something like 50+ on high settings.

I don't know, its run really poorly on every pc that I've run it with that had an AMD card. I'm pretty sure that its a known issue. I'm also pretty sure that it'll never get fixed.

The last update released was I believe 1.7 and one for Episodes, they wont be patching anything I guess now, It's been like that for years.

Which is why I wouldn't get my hopes up about AMD fixing the performance issues. If you roll GTA4 back to 1.4 or 1.5 it works well from what I hear but that won't work for the episodes.

It is NOT a GPU thing..It's a core-scheduling thing.

Works fine with Nvidia, when rolling back the patch, and with older drivers where you could disable catalyst ai. I'm going to blame AMD on this one.
