Thermaltake Venus w/ opty 165

Thread Starter
i installed the Thermaltake Venus on my opty 165 last night with some AS5. temps. were initially 34 degrees, but i saw them shoot up to 69 degrees while i was unraring a big file.

i'm thinking that i probably didn't apply the AS5 right, but i'm just trying to confirm. is the Venus sufficient cooling for this processor?

ooo, and it's the Venus 12, to be specific.

well i took apart my venus 12 heatsink the other day that i've been running for about a year. and even though it has a killer fan on it, i personally think that the heatsink isn't efficient. its like a stock heatsink w/ a big ass fan on it.

hmmm....that doesn't sound good. i was looking at the opty's stock heatsink yesterday...it comes with heatpipes and everything. i'm considering dropping the thermaltake fan onto it and see how it runs.

if you can find a way to drop the thermaltake fan onto that heatsink, i'd say thats the way to go. the venus12 has no heat pipes. just a lot of copper fins.

Those Opterons do get hot. I have a SI-120 with a 90CFM fan on mine and it loads at 50*C with only 1.45V on the vcore. Compared to my old San Diego, that is considerably warmer at much lower voltage.

thats wierd. my core temps only get to 55 when i'm running 1.56v. I thought they stayed relatively cool.

Is that load temperatures? Is that the actual core temp. (not the CPU temp.)? What is your ambient temp.? Is that with 100% load on both cores simultaneously? Mine are taken after 66hrs. in Prime with an ambint temp. of 85*F (dual instances of test #2).

Well 60*F is very different from 85*F. My core temps. are 43*C with a 57*F ambient temp. Summer over here is a nightmare for my overclocks (gets as hot as 110*F ). Water is the next step for me, since I'm tired of big/heavy heatsinks.
