[TR] Sony PlayStation Vita sales crawl - Page 9

I agree what others are saying that it shouldn't be a phone but at the same time I disagree. The 3g version should be able to become a phone on t-mobiles network. I'm sure the sales would jump if this was the case with t-mobile discounting them on a 2 year contract. Add in android and you have yourself one touch system to compete against. I wouldn't be interested as to me that would be gimmick but look at how many sales the wii had...

Currently, as it stands the 3g version is useless. 250mb's for 14.99? Seriously? What was Sony thinking and why even bothered releasing it if that was going to be the case? I hope At&t fully funded that feature and backed it up 100%.

This is a gaming handheld device, the cost and effort of getting the vita to be phone ready is more trouble than its worth. Sim cards, carriers have to be involved. The device physically is not suited, which means a redesign so that it is thin enough for a phone, yet thick enough to be gripped properly with 2 joysticks....just is not possible at the moment. Sony playstation phone didn't sell so well, people don't want a half job, it either has to be a solid phone and gaming machine or just pick one and stick with it.
Imagine the added cost, the confusion it would cause for potential buyers, people asking if you can NOT use the phone function because these days who doesn't have a phone? Who wants to pay more monthly bills?
Understand this is a portable gaming system, it will sell once the games for it are good enough and plenty enough. There is no blockbuster title on the vita, aside from uncharted. You'd have to be one hell of a fan to buy a new console JUST for that, or you are an impulse buyer. Sony needs to bring in some AAA games, not just the big names but actually deliver.
People have tablets, smartphones for all the other stuff. Sony is struggling enough selling it as a gaming machine, not like their phones/tablets sell particularly well.

Like I said, MOAR games is common sense. These other factor that you state would be so difficult are trivial for a business of this magnitude to orchestrate. If they want it, they can make it happen. Redevelopment plans are constantly being worked upon and discussed on a daily basis. And frankly, I never said anything about a half done job. If you read my last post that was clearly indicated. You are positing problem in my hypothesis that I never even suggested.

All in all, sony has failed in the production, execution, and development of this Vita from the get-go. If you don't want a half-asses product, then why would you make a touchpad on the backside before securing games that are even worth playing on it? Moreover, A phone could easily be incorporated in this deivive with minimal weight and size problems. But yet again you are dragging me away from the point I was making.

Furthermore, I see this argument being extended infinitely in the future due to the fact that most of it comes from our unshakably stubborn opinions. So I will rap it up by saying that I acknowledge and value your opinion as an individual, and at no point do I undermine your right to your own opinion. It has its own merits. And Good day to you Sir. smile.gif

The Vita supposedly has some pretty interesting titles on the horizon. A new Sly Cooper game, Assassin's Creed, even a Call of Duty. However, it needs a couple of those really interesting IP's that draw people in and are generally exclusive to it. I'm anxiously awaiting DJ Max Technika Tune myself. The DJ max Portable games kept me glued to my PSP constantly, but rhythm games aren't everyone's thing.

However, the other game series that got my PSP so much love was Monster Hunter. If Capcom made a Monster Hunter game for the Vita, for starters they would automatically move millions of units in Japan because of its popularity there. Also, it does have a decent fan base in the western hemisphere these days. Lastly, it could be a GREAT showcase of what the Vita's capable of.

On another note, other things they could do to make the Vita a bit better overall is:

1. Improve the web browser. It loads fast, and the screen is beautiful, but if you scroll out of your current margin, you get this ugly checkered box pattern for a few seconds while the Vita renders the new space. I find this annoying and I KNOW the Vita can do better. Sony just needs to spend a bit more time optimizing the browser. Also, flash support would be nice but I hear that problem exists because Adobe is dead-set on letting mobile flash wither away and die.

2. Freaking PS1 support! This was supposed to be a day one feature and now Sony says it'll be out with Firmware 1.8. We're still on 1.6. I have no idea what's taking them so long to get this feature implemented but it's ridiculous.

3. Improve the GUI. The stupid bubble thing is cluttered, inefficient, and does a fantastic job of obscuring your backgrounds. Not to mention that every game has to have its own bubble so the bigger your game library, the more pages you have to have and scroll through. I hate it.

Overall, I think if the Vita can just get a few good games going and improve its functionality a bit, it could be a success. I'm not so sure about a price cut on the unit itself, but those damned memory cards DEFINITELY need one.

RIP PSP.

If that's true, then RIP good games as well. There are some alright casual games on mobile phones, but nothing serious, length, in-depth, or with controls that aren't semi-terrible.

But with a controller for iOS and Android devices and a booming market we will hopefully see better and better games as time goes on.

Maybe if they release a new revision with some more RAM and maybe some slightly higher clocks on a shrunk process, maybe it'll go somewhere, and not for us tech heads, but for those that played with one and just felt wrong. They also need a new better ad campaign or something, also make their propietary memory crap more in-line w/ flash memory now days, or scrap it and have the revised model using SDHC and SDXC. The whole thing just seems like a technical and marketing fiasco. Really is sad, since it'd be nice to see truly powerful handhelds on the market. As is most smartphones run their 3D games smoother and have better compatibility and software available.

I don't know what you are talking about but I owned one and the games are actually very fluid and actually pretty incredible. Uncharted was extremely fluid and very creative. Marvel vs. Capcom looked really good and there was never any framerate or responsivness issues. The specs are fine for something that small.

Nobody is going to carry around a Vita or 3DS because their iPhones and Samsung Galaxy's can achieve the same amount of entertainment. It's not about graphics when it comes to portable gaming, it's portability - i.e. people don't want to carry around more than 1 large rectangular device.
