[VB] Google: We are so over patents, especially in their current form

After fighting the patent battle of the decade in court with Oracle, Googlers are getting publicly fed up with software patents as a whole. Conceptually, they just don’t jive with innovation, two prominent Googlers have said recently.

“One thing that we are very seriously taking a look at is the question of software patents and whether, in fact, the patent system as it currently exists is the right system to incent innovation,” said Google public policy director Pablo Chavez at a conference in Mountain View, Calif, today.

“We think that these patent wars are not helpful to consumers,” Chavez continued. “They’re not helpful to the marketplace. They’re not helpful to innovation.”

While some might see this stance as a reaction to Google’s ongoing legal woes, the company brain trust has been adamantly antipatents for a while.

This brings to mind the movie Flash of Genius. It's based on the true story of how the patent system failed to protect Robert Kearns the inventor of the intermediate windscreen wiper electronics. Basically Ford stole the electronics design and buried the real inventor in legal jargon. The patent system does not protect innovation. It hasn't for over 60 years.

Seems like any group of people that are actually committed to progress and aren't just litigious jackasses who want to make crap-tonnes of money hold similar positions as this. Just another area where the legal system is miles behind.

No that's not what I'm saying. What I mean is that the patent system was made to protect the inventors and innovation. So not only is it now grossly been misused for corporate gain by the likes of Apple, but it also fails to serve its proper function making it essentially useless. If anything it's now days going the exact opposite to what is was supposed to do as it's actively preventing innovation with the rampant patent trolling.

lol, didn't Google just launch a patent suit against Apple for stopping like all their products or was that like a news troll? It was to stop the iphone, ipad, and imac or something like that. lol.

Doesn't Apple have 1001 lawsuits against Android atm?

Google can't sit back and get bullied, they did pay $12.5 Billion for that portfolio, and needs to be used against the patent trolling company of the century.

And Edison 50 years before that.

Seems like since there has been a patent system, there has been someone abusing it and making millions off of other peoples work.
