Might be people comparing a fresh install of windows 8 with a old install of windows 7 when they should be comparing a fresh install of both 7 and 8. I haven't really noticed any difference in performance on my own windows 8.

The smoother feel might be from the really high but very stable 1000 DPC latency in windows 8. On 7 and below the DPC latency will be really low at idle but can spike to higher numbers when playing games.

720p is 1280x720
1080p is in ms own dxva supported max of 1920 x 1088
he prob forgot to disable pae and autorise each title via dep so you can ignore the test outside margin error.they re all almost identically within each other margin of error.

EXACTLY!

There is next to no real appreciable performance difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8 when you compare apples to apples (ie a fresh install of Windows 7 to a fresh install of Windows 8). Heck, just compare the performance difference of a Windows 7 box after it's been up and running with "general day in and day out" use and installs and unintalls of various drivers and programs to a Windows 7 box that has been freshly reformatted, reinstalled, and fully patched ... and you'll see even bigger performance gains.

That won't really affect most games though.

What Windows 8 will help with is being faster for slower machines, like gaming on a laptop/netbook. The OS consumes about 150MB less RAM, leaving that RAM available for other programs. On a high-end machine that extra RAM won't make much of a noticeable difference.

Still, after seeing the results from Valve running L4D2 on Linux at a higher framerate, I'm curious if Microsoft can trim down the layers of the OS to allow for higher performance.

Windows 8 isn't just about performance either, it's far more secure than Windows 7, I'm happy to use it based on that alone. Throw in rainmeter and something like start8 (or whatever the other program that gives you a start menu is), and I'm looking forward to upgrading a Vista and Win7 machine to Windows 8.
