Just made the switch to Intel! (And Have A Few Questions)

Hello, as my name suggests I was an AMD fan for a while. Recently my pursuit of performance led me to realize that I need to get away from AMD. So today I ordered a used i5 2500K and a used ASUS P8Z68-V Pro along with a CM Hyper 212Evo (yes I know its not the best but it fits in my case and budget). I was wondering how far I could expect and try to overclock my processor and what temps are good bad and horrible as I know almost nothing about Intel.

Welcome to Intel!
Great CPU, cooler, and Motherboard choice! I am assuming you got the Gen 3 motherboard?

Sandy bridge Overclocks very well. You can find a lot of information in the Overclocking guide in my sig. I used it personally. 4.5 GHz stable in 10 minutes.

I bet you can easily reach 4.5. 4.6 - 5.0 is a bigger wall and requires a bit more playing to get it right.

When I had my I5 2500K @ 4.5GHz @ 1.335v, I was getting around 35C idle and 65C load. Folding, and with a 670. Folding is very stressful so that was definitely working the PC its hardest. I get about 70C max with my 670, so that can be adding some heat to the CPU as well. I have a Hyper 212+ cooler and love it. Im sure you'll love your evo.

All the items you bought were good choices actually.

Welp actually I didn't get the Gen3 its just the normal PRO afaik. Its comming from geeks.com on ebay and their description isnt the best but the picture provided of the mobo shows it says PRO not PRO/GEN3 so I'm assuming its just PRO.

The exact 2500K i was going to buy on eBay for $160 got sold so I had to get one for $200 and I'll have to wait a week until I get more money to actually get the 212EVO.

I'm hoping this was a good choice which I really think it is considering the i5 smashes the Phenom II's and will beat the faildozers.

  • I don't understand the point of brand favoritism.
I really hope you arent expecting to much of an increase when gaming. Asuming you overclocked your 1090t, your 550ti would be a heavy bottleneck when gaming. Unless you are talking about games like SCII and Civ5. Most other modern games will have a much better increase from a GPU upgrade.
