I am clueless as why people call this one of the best RPGs ever made. On consoles perhaps?

I don't understand that version of PC elitism... all but maybe one of the RPG's mentioned as the good ones earlier in this thread are on consoles as well.

After beating the tutorial, you have 3 (well 4 but one would be stupid to go to xD) choices of areas you can go to. You can go the way you went, which is the way you should go when learning the game. You could also go down to the catacombs, which is the direction behind the guy in chainmail sitting near the bonfire. Theres some stairs leading down near him, if you go down there you enter the new londo ruins... even an experienced player probably wont go here, but there is a building that links you to blighttown and the valley of the drakes, provided you have the master key (starting gift, or thief class).

If you run through the valley of the drakes, you can get up into the darkroot forest where there's all sorts of stuff to do. One of the coolest early minibosses is there, a hydra that shoots water jets out. You could also go up and fight the moonlight butterfly, that is a fairly easy boss as well.

In the end though, the game is all about the combat system. If you don't enjoy fighting the enemies, you won't like the game. The combat style is more like a fighting game then most RPG's. A sufficiently experienced player can kill enemies at level 1 that normal level 30 players have trouble with, since you can avoid damage by dodging at the right times.

Yeah, about the guy in chainmail sitting near the bonfire... he doesn't like me very much cuz I poked him few times. He's invincible and every time I restart the game he's there at the spawn point chasing me. I found a way to get rid of him but it means I have to run a bit and get him stuck. He also respawns every time I die which just makes it frustrating. And reloading the game doesn't make him drop hate. That is quite annoying.

And yeah I'm not really a player who loves constant action (reason why I stay away from FPS games), I like to spend a lot of time doing other stuff like talking, exploring, etc. I just don't feel that Dark Souls is my type of RPG.

Thing is, The Witcher, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, all those franchises started on PC, they just got expanded to consoles. But since they were originally created for PCs, they keep the core gameplay and even though future sequels get released for consoles first, they are still very playable on the PC (Skyrim for example).
If you look at it, PC > console ports are almost always great ports, while console > PC are almost always underwhelming, weak ports. I feel that consoles are like Apple, and PC like Android. Apple releases dumbed down phones for the average people, consoles release dumbed down games for the masses. Android makes phones and PC creates games that can unleash full potential. That is probably why PC gaming will never day, no matter what doomsayers predict.

He isn't invincible, he just takes a few hits. Try to get in a backstab for good damage.

I think you can get NPCs to stop attacking you by having oswald forgive your sins for a hefty price... he's after the first "real" boss, the gargoyles... It doesn't sound like you've made it that far yet though.

[edit] Nevermind, he's a bit harder then I remember. Still beatable though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYcVgMIt3SY

Well if you attacked him you're kind of screwed.

When you ring the first bell of awakening, a priest will appear in the chapel and you can request an absolution to him, which will, at a large soul cost, make all the NPCs passive once again.

While I agree that dark souls is, technically, a very, very poor game compared to the witcher 2, it still have the most amazing combat system and mechanics that i've seen in a video game. I'm 38 hours in and I am still learning things every moment I play. It will take a very long time until one can says that he mastered every mechanics and secrets that the game have to offer.

Playing it right now.
I'd like to point a few things out for you Windows 8 guys, since I'm playing on the Enterprise Evaluation and ran into quite a lot of problems along the way:

Uninstall all eventual GFWL software you have, download THIS and follow the instructions in the readme.
Then, make sure the Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant service is running and set in Automatic.

The game should now be playable. Run it, check if everything is fine.

As for the fix for the various caps, bugs, and stuff:
Download and install the latest DSfix by Durante, copy the files from the DL folder to the Dark Souls folder, open the .ini configuration file and set it up as you wish - you must disable the in-game AA though!
For Nvidia users, you can force AA, AF and even ambient occlusion (as long as your PC is powerful enough to keep up with all this stuff) from Nvidia Inspector like Mr_Nothin explains here - however it is vital to not enable Supersampling from Durante's fix in order to use these settings, and to use your native monitor resolution both in game and in the DSfix.ini

It is also vital that your controller is plugged in/activated before you launch the game.
If you don't have an Xbox controller like myself, you can use your eventual PS3 controller with Motioninjoy by setting it to "X360 emulator". The driver has some bugs here and there but it's usually stable once it gets going.

Keep in mind that you need constant connection for this game to work in online mode, if your connection drops the game will just quit itself and go back to the start menu. The game has constant autosave so I doubt you'll lose any progress overall (maybe with bosses? I didn't test this much, it only happened to me a couple times) but it's just too ******* annoying if your connection is as bad and unstable as mine.

OP, I think you'd help quite a lot of new players in trouble if you could post this in the first post!

Hi, you can play your game using an offline profile if you dont want it to deconnect.

If you use the same name for your offline profile than your online you will not loose your saves.

That kind of destroys the fascinating multiplayer aspect of the game, you won't get troll messages, world invasions, etc.
