You should do the obligatory level 1 playthrough.

After you beat the game a few times that became the trendy thing to do, and it is challenging.

That is another great option as a starting weapon. Its very powerful when you get it so early.

Eh I just figure not enough people know about the Gravelord sword. Everyone seems to gravitate towards the Drake Sword, which is OK, but GL is stupidly op'd.

Either way I recommend getting it if you try to stay in Human form a lot, even if you don't want to use it, as it will really save your life from OP'd griefers and non invincible cheaters in the early game (the two handed attack murders stamina on players too boot, and I think causes toxic), and if you wanna farm souls past the seal of Astoria gate early, gives you a way to do that as well.

But keep in mind, it is a Game breaking sword to have early, way more so than the Drake sword, so try to not use it too much on your first play through.

I guess I could try that as well. Just not a huge fan of pyromancy.

You guys making me want to 'finish' the game. I still need to fight Kalameet and Manus. I've taken a ton of screenshots of the game, but those bosses are missing from the collection. I need to fix that.

Is there a DS2 thread yet?

If not then:

Where to go, Im lost. I hate the design they went with, instead of having a -logical- but somewhat open world like DS1, they went with this: Go anywhere and get lost.
Ive been to second bonfire in the firetowerplace, and the one before the pirateship area. Ive been to the second bonfire at the giant forest, but dunno where else to go. I really hate the new design choices.

I dont believe there is a DS2 thread yet. I havent played it myself, but the way you travel through areas does look drastically different compared to DS. Maybe from the shear amount of levels there was a decision to make navigation easy, instead of integrating the levels, you can just warp. I'd prefer the integration myself. Fast travelling seems to kill the journey/hardship aspect of the game i feel.

the major flaw is the lack of direction you're describing. However it's an excellent game, here's a progression guide:
