Club 3D ATI Radeon HD6970 MemIO and Shader 100+ degrees

Thread Starter
Hello,

I've been having some serious problems with overheating of my graphics card. Under serious load the main GPU temperature reaches about 80 degrees. But my MemIO and Shader temperatures reach over 100 degrees celcius causing my graphics card to artifact and crash.

I've had the card for a year now so I decided to check the default thermal paste and it was very dry (as in, a muddy road being scorched by the sun for a gazillion years). Can the thermal paste being dried up cause this kind of temperature differencfe? Or is my card just screwed.

I ask because I can RMA the card if I don't start fiddeling with the thermal paste.

If I were to replace the thermal paste, what thermal paste would you guys recommend?

Any help is much appreciated,

Sirian

Whenever you remove a heatsink from a chip, exposing the thermal paste, you have to replace it every time. The whole point of thermal paste is to fill in the space that would otherwise become an air pocket. Air seriously hinders the transfer of heat compared to metal. Besides that, all thermal paste ends up dry eventually. They only come in a paste form so that they can fill in and contour to the surface of your chip and heatsink. It is the metal particles in the paste that end up doing the work. If there seems to be any cracks and holes that reveal the surface of your chip which do not seem likely to have happened by the actual act of removing the heatsink yourself (yes, that does cause something) then that might explain the high temps. Regardless, you need to thoroughly clean away all the old paste/residue and reapply new paste. Then you will either see a drop in temps or not and go from there. Hope that helps smile.gif

I used mx-4 on my 6950s but my setup is a bit different. I got great temps on my crossfire :>
and this... if you want lower temps and lower noise. http://www.overclock.net/t/1203636/official-amd-ati-gpu-mod-club-aka-the-red-mod
