Building an Entertainment Desktop

I'm new here, so pardon my noobness or if I'm posting in the wrong place. I'm hoping to build my own entertainment PC. I want to be able to stream a lot of stuff like anime, download and watch lots of movies, play PC exclusive games like Star Wars: the Old Republic, The Witcher 1, World of Warcraft, etc. I'm hoping to either be able to use some of the parts from my laptop in this, or at least sell them. My laptop is an entertainment PC already, but it's not very upgradeable. I looked up about it, and apparently it has an integrated GPU/CPU from the Intel chipset family or something. It's a Toshiba Satellite P300. It's gotten really slow and plagued with problems now though. I'm going to get a diagnostic run on it by Canada Computers and see what can be done. It's doesn't have an HDMI port, but I want to download some movies and play some games in 3D too. I hope I haven't been too all over the place. So basically I want to build an entertainment PC, and I'm looking at my options to make this as cheap as possible, and to not get useless parts that I don't need for gaming or entertainment. I won a Kingston HyperX 120 GB SSD with an upgrade kit, and an 8GB (2 4GB) DDR3 Kingston HyperX memory kit to start me off. I'm hoping to find out if any of the parts from my laptop can be reused or sold sometime today, so I'll update on that, but I'm hoping for a parts list, and some guidance on how to put them all together once the parts are gotten. Thanks so much, hope I can get some good help here! biggrin.gif

I'll tell you right now, there's not gonna be anything you can use out of your laptop. Don't give CC any money to check. If you want to try and make some money, reformat it yourself and do a fresh install of windows - even then, I doubt you'd get much money. Anyways, that's my quick response before you go to CC.

Depends on your situation. Simplest answer is, if you're outputting a digital signal to a receiver/tv, then not really. If you output to headphones or a set of speakers, than it can be, but not necessarily. In the end, you don't need a dedicated sound card, but if you feel like you could appreciate better sound/your equipment warrants it, then it could be a worthy investment.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't spend any money for them to check because they said back it up myself before I think about doing a diagnostic. I went to Geek Squad at Best Buy, and their quick analysis for free made them 90% sure it was my motherboard. If it wasn't, it was definitely a hardware giving trouble, and seeing as I'm going to be upgrading soon, he advised that it's not worth dropping $200 and up to replace or fix a malfunctioning hardware. He also advised on getting a barebone computer at CC first, since it's more accessible and easier for a newbie like me. What do you guys think? I'm going to go back to CC soon and check out their barebones and come back with a list of the best possible ones. That makes it easier to get started on the parts list.

Really the best thing to do is start from scratch, there is no way you're going to be able to reuse anything from the laptop as others have already stated. But you have a great head start, SSD for a boot drive + a couple games and 8GBs of memory. Just curious how much are you looking to spend?

I am starting from scratch. I've heard that people pay a pretty package for recycled computer parts though. I'm going to look into recycling it online on like Kijiji or something like I've been suggested to, and see if anyone is interested. If no one is, hey, I lose nothing in trying, but I have money to gain if it works. From what I've heard, I'm looking at an $800 PC, but max I'm willing to spend is $1000 before tax.

So I got my PC built at Tiger Direct, and because I got a 3 year protection plan, and ended up going for high end parts so it lasts longer, it ended up being around $1,500 (with tax included in that total). I'm still trying to work my way around getting to know the PC. I'm not sure exactly how to configure simultaneous audio output to my display and headset. At different times I've manged to configure bot separately, but I haven't been able to find my way back to that AMD config page since yesterday. Can anyone help me out here? I think it's the config page for the sound card built into my AMD Radeon HD 7850 XFX built graphics card. If it helps, I also got an ASUS P8 Z77-V LX motherboard, and an Intel i5 3550 processor. Thanks in advance! biggrin.gif
