Scary..

I don't fully understand the whole process but does this likely mean typical school fights would likely elevate to more and more gun fights?

Only if 3D Printer became a standard in everyone home. At roughly 9k I doubt anytime soon. Not to mention they have different kinds of 3D printers, ones for Metal, Plastic, powder etc. Along with various sizes.

The benefits of the technology are vast. Say your Car fender gets smashed. If you have a 3D printer and the the design specs. You could generate a cad file and print a new fender.

Or Say you broke the bracket on your computer case, use cad to make a new one. Print it, paint it, PRESTO CHANGO. Case looks good as new.

The good people you speak of (like myself and you I presume) are already armed, why would "we" need a 3d printed gun to protect ourselves?

sure it may be ~90% cheaper compared to buying a new firearm, but reverting back to your quote most people who practice the 2nd amendment, already own multiple firearms, hard to beat in price something you already paid for.

in the context of hypothetical examples, A man goes to the 7-11 to buy a corn dog, that man just so happens to have a conceal carry permit, and is armed, Statistics do show if a Criminal were to come to the same 7-11 @ the same time, and the man pulls his firearm out to the would-be criminal, the criminal will run.

however this isn't 100% of the time, the last percentage I saw regarding this, is roughly 65%.

is this the same guy who printed out a plastic lower?

I think Red Jacket Firearms in Baton Rouge use a 3d printer for rapid prototyping wink.gif

They did a zombie episode where they used it smile.gif

3d printers can & do use ceramic powders impregnated with resins, once cured they are extremely durable.

in short this idea would be giving criminals firearms for free.

You do realize that even an entry level 3D printer is more expensive than a black market (which includes having a buddy who doesn't have a criminal record buy one legally then give it to you then "lose" it) firearm, right?

Anyone who wants a gun can get one, and 3D printing is probably never going to be the path of least resistance for this, unless you have far greater problems from the powers that be than from criminals.

This has amazing potential (Not 3D printing firearms, but 3D printing in general). Imagine decades from now, where every home has a little room for 3D printing, where they would print all their households items, furniture, gadgets, clothe... etc. An innovating community would emerge behind this and you could just go online, pick out the designs of any particular item you like, and print it. That would be all it took. It would cost you nothing, besides the material needed to print it. This would revolutionize our way of life. Completely flip over the economy. It would change everything. I wish it happens in my lifetime atleast.

Now they just need to learn how to print a 3d printer with a 3d printer, so it wont be a fortune to make.

It wouldn't. I'm not aware of a 3D printer that uses a medium able to withstand the chamber pressures of a firearm.

As far as everyone's concerns about this making it easier for criminals to get guns... why? They can already get them easily enough, have no need of a several-thousand-dollar machine, and no need of any CAD knowledge to do so. Read the article as an example of how cool 3D printing can be, not as a scary new addition to the world of firearms. wink.gif
