How much difference in PPD will 100MHz make on an i5-2500k?

I've been tweaking my 2 i5-2500k systems over the past couple days. They are nearly identical builds (see: Red Devil and Slave Driver in my sig) and I really haven't been "pushing them" until very recently.

Now I've got them humming along for hours on end doing Folding on both the CPU and GPU. Both are air cooled, and at 100% load on all 4 cores and the GPU at 100%, I have CPU temps of 61, 65, 64, 64, and a package temp of 67C after 8 hours. That is overclocked at a somewhat respectable 1.300V for the CPU VCore at 4.4Ghz. On my GTX 560Ti (384-core) video card, I'm running stock voltage and pushing the OC'ing to 882MHz (up from 850MHz stock) and at 70% fan, it stays about 73C.

So my question to the OCN folding crew are these:

1) What do you think of my temps?
2) Will I really get much more PPD if I bump up the CPU to 4.5GHz or maybe 4.6GHz?
3) Will I really get much more PPD if I bump up the GPU to 890 or 900Mhz?

One of these machine is at my office, and it just runs 24/7 and I'd rather not have it crash and have to drag myself into the office to reboot or have it "melt down" when I'm not there or on vacation.

With both cpus and the gpu bumping the clocks to 900mhz and 4.6ghz like you mentioned would maybe bump up your total ppd 5% ? Temps are fine but honestly if they've given you no trouble I'd leave well enough alone.

Your temps look fine for the cooler you are running + your voltage.

As far as PPD: For the CPU, a 100mhz bump would result in ~ 750-1500ppd increase in windows and ~1500ppd in Linux.
You sig is non-specific as to what Corsair memory you are running. You may try and bump in to the next mhz level (1600->1866, 1866->2133). That may require bumping the voltage to 1.65v. That would be a nice PPD gain, for free.

For the GPU: on my 560. going from 900->925 netted alittle less than 800 ppd. So id guess a 20mhz bump on a TI would net about the same. Your temps look good there also.

If one 2500k is dedicated, you may consider joining the TC. We have fun smile.gif

The RAM is the 1.5V DDR3 1600 9-9-9-24 CAS 9 version.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233144

It's not the best stuff in the world, I really wasn't planning on OC'ing the heck out of it, but if OCN thinks it can handle it, I might try it.

For "Slave Driver", I pretty much have to stay under Windows 7 to Fold.

I guess I technically could try setting up "Red Devil" to fold under a self booting Linux client. When I run it for folding, that's the only thing it's doing, but when It's not folding, the wife is using it, so it's just easier for her to shut everything down in case she wasn't to play Rift or something.

I've already joined the folding team. I've been put on Division III until I can get things squared away a little more and tweaked out.

[Edit]

Looks like the wife is home already, "Red Devil" is offline.

Well, your only talking a 2-3% difference. But your RAM should certainly do 1866mhz @ CAS9 w/ 1.65v.

And folding in windows is perfectly fine. If its a machine your wife uses also, no need to complicate it with Linux.

And, hooray! Glad you decided to join the TC smile.gifsmile.gif

Kewl, thanks for the info. I'll try messing with the memory over clocking tomorrow on "Slave Driver".

Well, I got MFM.NET all set up and working through my VPN tunnel now. So now it see's everything. For some reason, it wasn't seeing the dual Xeon server (stupid routing table). But now I can see and control almost everything. Still can't see one of the Xeon servers since it is running 5.0.1 of the software (it's has to be on an old copy of Windows 2000 for now), but 9 out of 10 slots ain't bad.

Just with the tweaks I did so far, the PPD has gone up a bunch. Before I was averaging 75k a day, now it's reporting 104k PPD.

Yeah, 4.4GHz on the i5-2500k and 882MHz on the GTX 560Ti seem to be the long term sweet spot for both "Red Devil" and "Slave Driver".

Not half bad at all temps for a CM 212+ in Push/Pull in a HAF 912 case with a 140mm side fan, an a 200mm fan in front and 200mm fan on the top.

nice, are you gonna use the 2500k for tc? if so, I'd suggest gettin at least a 4.6 oc biggrin.gif
