Unlocking a 6850

Thread Starter
Is it worth the trouble to unlock a 6850 to a 6870? Is it a very difficult process?
It is very difficult, you'll have to write your own bios or mod your 6850.
never heard of this on 6850. is this even possible?

A 6850 doesn't unlock to a 6870. A 6950 unlocks to a 6970. There's nothing you can do.

Nope, in this case you bought a 6850 and got a 6850, nothing to do about that unfortunately.

What about unlocking the voltage? Would it be safe to run 24/7 with a voltage increase?

Totally, I suggest you use MSI Afterburner, make a custom profile for your fans so that if the card reach 80*C the fans goes to 100%.
It will never go above 70*C.

I recommand you to raise the core speed by humps of 5mhz and test it with current voltage.
If it crash or artefact, raise voltage or lower the overclock.

Good luck

As long as you can cool the card, yes. I believe only reference cards have voltage control. You'll probably need something like Accelero S1 plus + Turbo Module(12cm fan). OR Accelero Twin Turbo Pro.

I personally would chose Accelero S1 Plus because if the fans make noise or die, you can just replace with any 12cm fan biggrin.gif

Just OC it past 900MHz if you can. It'll perform almost as well as a 6870
