670 SLI, evaluate my set up

Hi, I am attempting to build a SLI Gaming Rig:

Goal is to maximize Gaming performance on a 120Hz ASUS VG278H while remaining quieter than the open air alternative such as Corsair 500R, CPU is i5-3570K, will OC CPU and GPU when necessary.

Here is the setup(second card coming in a month later):
Define R4 $109.99(Big fan of the R4)
EVGA 670 FTW $407.99
140mm fan 4X $21.5(Bottom intake,, Rear exhaust, top exhaust. ), 2 stock 140mm are 67 CFM/15-19dba(moving the original rear exhaust to front intake)
Fan type: XIGMATEK CLF-F1454 : 60CFM/16Dba
PH-TC14PE $75.00 (comes with a Y adapter for plugging in 2 fan in one Mobo header)
Total $614.5

2X Front intake,1X Bot intake goes to the fan controller, Rear and Bottom exhaust goes to the Mobo header

To explain the fan set up in more detail:

The 2 stock 140mm fan will be located at the front intake, I 140mm intake mounted at the bottom infront of PSU, the exhaust fan are located at the rear and the top rear fan mount.



The overall set up would be like this picture(borrowed from here), except the Cooler will be a bit taller(still fits), I would have the 2 extra fans(bottom intake and top exhaust), the mobo will be Z77 instead of Z68(both ASrock Extreme 4)

Total Fan CFM count, 2X 67 CFM +2X 60 CFM intake, 2X 60 CFM + 1/2 Blower GPU exhaust.

Mounted on a Standard length slim(12"X8.6") ATX board: ASRock Z77 Extreme 4(support SLI), there is another PCI slot inbetween the 2 PCI3.0 slots so the GPU won't be right next to each other.


PSU Seasonic X850 Gold.

Reason I picked FTW is that its blower style contributes more to the Positive airflow I want to establish, Also its Intake fan would be right ontop of my 140mm bottom intake fan. with Windforce/PE I might need a more open air case and a side exhaust fan to prevent them heating up the rest of the Mobo.

So,Is this set up good? If not where I need the improve? (the GPU? or Cooling? or maybe I should get a more open air case and give up Noise control with the R4?)

You do know a 3570k, overclocked or not, isn't enough to reach a constant 120 fps in BF3?
Not even a 3960x is enough...

That doesn't concern me, my intent is to push the FPS as far as the CPU would allow. Tthe upper limit of one 670 in BF3 seems to be 90 on most reviews in 1920X1080 Ultra setting and if 100-110 is possible via SLI I will definately get it. This is still tentative and if I am sufficiently satisfied with the performance of a single 670 maybe I would drop the SLI plan but for nowI want to prep for the SLI possibility.

A single 670 will definitely not be getting 90 fps in BF3 Ultra 1080p, try 55 and you're closer to the truth.
If you decide to lower game quality by reducing MSAA and Mesh Quality, you can expect to climb closer to 120 fps constantly.

this Gigabyte Windforce 670 I never said "Full Ultra", just "Ultra" claimed by some reviews.


Plus whether a single 670 can get 90 is irrelevant to this topic, my question was about whether my 670 SLI set up is OK in term of airflow and space or not and you haven't attempted answering that question once. Why don't you quit trolling and actually try to be helpful?

To answer you question. Generally when talking SLi and airflow. If you are planning to use the reference blower style fan then there's really no problem in having them near eachother at all - since that's what blower style fans are good at - namely getting rid of the heat and outside the case.
If you aim for non-reference cooling it's quite essential that the two cards have at least 1cm space between then so heat won't get trapped between the cards ad circulate inside the case causing a great heat increase. Also with that kind of coolers on the GFX's a good airflow that gets the hot air out is of extreme importance.

I run TriSLi with reference cooling and I have not experience any heat issues.

Thanks for your advice and picture. I currently plan on using EVGA FTW which is Blower style design(680 reference cooling & PCB on a 670) so that shouldn't be much of a problem. However I am quite concerned that according to some users it runs hotter and noiser than Custom Cooling solution like the Gigabyte Windforce 3X or MSI N670 PE.


As far as spacing is concerned, the 2 PCIE3.0 slots are seperated but Battery and 1 PCIE2.0 slots so there should be at least 2-3 cm/1-1.5" of space between them so I think it will be fine. I think If I go with that approach I will move the either the bottom intake or top exhaust fan to the Side Panel(this should be where the GPUs are and have it exhaust the hot air in this region.

Would that approach work?

Which approach really depend on what you chose of GFX.
If the radial blower fan then yes these tend to run hotter and a bit noisier than non-reference coolers, but their advantage lies in keep lower temperatures when cramped together - where non-reference cards more often than not overheat.

If you want Silence and lower card temps then go for non reference cooling when the cards can be at least 1.5cm appart. Then you want to keep the bottom intake fan and then set the sidefan as exhaust to create a tunnel airflow effect and get the generated heat out of the case as quickly as possible.
If you use the reference blower fans, then instead you'd want the side fan set as intake to cool the cards from the side and give them some fresh cool air since the heat will be funneled through the blower fan cooler and out the case.

Therefore when using reference blower fans your cards may run a bit hotter, but the internal case temperature may actually be a bit lower than compared to non-reference cooling.

Hmm, I am thinking going with the Custom Cooler option and move the top exhaust fan down to the side panel as an exhaust, so I have a good air flow loop down in the GPU area with 4 of the 5 140mm Case fans contributing to cooling. However this leaves my CPU out by itself with only 1 140mm exhaust fan & its Phantek PH-TC14PE cooler, will it be OK with the top exhaust area blocked off(with Define R4 the unused Fan mounts can be blocked off to keep noise in and dust out).?
