Should I buy a PS3? Too late? Or right on time?

Hello friends,

I am soon to be returning to my home country, the United Provinces of Canada after about a month of studying in another country. I'm ready to blow some cash after being away and I was thinking of getting a PS3. I was fortunate enough to find a good deal online for a spankin' new 320GB slim online bundled with three games for a reasonable price of $300 before tax (reasonable for me).

However after doing some research I found out that the PS3 seems to have reached the end of it's cycle, Sony tending to release a new console every 6 years, 2012 being the sixth year since the release of the PS3. now I have heard rumors about the "PS4" coming out Christmas of 2013, while others have said the PS3 won't be replaced until 2016. If a new one is coming out soon, I don't want to waste my money now and have to buy another console.

On the other hand, I have also heard that they are releasing a new slimmer version of the PS3 (which is fine by me, I dont care if I miss out on something newer of the same model) which my instincts tell me is a sign that maybe Sony isn't going to release a new console anytime soon. Why release a slimmer version of your current console if you are just going to release a new console in a years time?

So right now I am unsure if I should buy a PS3 now or just wait. I already own a Xbox 360(xbox live fees are a **** though so i dont play it much) and I mosty play PC games, but there are some pretty titles I've wanted to try for awhile now and many of my friends own a PS3 and only a few own a Xbox. I think the free Internet might also encourage me to play more. Other features like blu-ray and stuff I probably wont use cause I have a theatre set.

So what do you guys think? Is this a good time to buy a PS3 at this time or not? If not I'll probably spend the money elsewhere (new microphone, or something of the sort). OCN members tend to have a better idea of when products come out, with new pc hardware coming out daily, so I decided to ask you guys.

Thanks.

PS I know there are many threads already about this but I wanted people's opinion on my particular situation.

PPS Sorry for the atrocious typing, damn iPad is impossible to type well on.

It depends on how much you like console gaming. If it's something that you can see yourself doing at least 10+ hours of gaming on it a week then I'd say get it now. It's not even Christmas 2012 yet so by the time it comes out in 2013 IF it comes out Christmas 2013 you would have played some great games and gotten your moneys worth out of the console to boot.

Id get it. I love my ps3 and use it a lot. Some of the playstation exclusive are great, especially little big planet 1 and 2. Even if the ps4 comes out in 2013, I personally wouldn't buy the 1st model of them and would wait at least a year after its released before buying one to make sure most of the bugs are worked out. Remember all the YLOD and RROD with the 1st ps3's and xbox 360's.

and like mxfreek09 said, you can fold on it.

If I had to buy a console I'd get a PS3, at least then you have the option to use the internet, and things like that (even though PS3 internet is agonizingly slow)

Honestly, I am in a similar position. I would like to get a PS3, and have an xbox 360. However, I don't play much of my 360 anymore. When I want to go on, usually on the dashboard there are one month subscription offers for $1 a month and I just pay a $1 to play. I would hold off on buying a PS3 as it seems to be the end of the line for it. I actually traded in my PS3 a couple years ago for a 360 and was happy I did so.

The PS3 works great as a multimedia unit. It has several streaming options plus blu ray, internet, and it can play games! Whats not to love? Who cares what is coming out and when. This is now. Get it.

Even if PS4 comes out by Xmas of 2013 it wont be up and running for another 6 months or a year. Typically support for "older" consoles lasts a couple years into the new product cycle as people arent always quick to adopt new hardware. I remember PS2 continued having new games well after the PS3s release.

Also, based on the intial pricing of the PS3, I wouldnt be suprised if the PS4 was insanely expensive.

Screw console gaming. The real gaming rig is the PC. The PC is the shizz, nothing can compete with the PC. Can you mod console games?no. Are graphics in consoles better? No. Can you utilize the console with other than gaming? NO. You can watch movies, videos. Surf, and go on OCN whenever. Plus good gaming comps aren't THAT expensive, and you can upgrade every month or 2 with a better component which extends your pc performance.
