SSD & HD Questions! Help Needed!

Thread Starter
I plan on buying an SSD and HD to run in a TJ08-E case. I need help!

How do I choose which drives in the BIOS to install Windows on and have that drive operate when I turn the PC on.

Also, will both drives show up in Windows? For example, if I put something in my storage drive, can I click around and find it.

How do I scan both drives with Antivirus software, in this case, AVG?

How do I link games on my desktop if they are in my storage drive, and when activated will they work?

When you first set up our computer, only attach the SSD, install Windows, then attach the rest of your drives.
Also, will both drives show up in Windows? For example, if I put something in my storage drive, can I click around and find it.
Yes, once you've installed Windows and connected your second drive, you can go into Disk Management and set up the second drive. It will then show up in Windows Explorer just like normal.
How do I scan both drives with Antivirus software, in this case, AVG?
I'm not familiar with AVG, but you should be able to set up your scans to check individual volumes.
How do I link games on my desktop if they are in my storage drive, and when activated will they work?
When you install games or programs, you can put them on whichever drive you wish. Any shortcuts you make will automatically be associated with them.

There are some other things you will want to do to prepare and optimize your build. Rather than try to list them all myself, I will direct you to...

Sean's Awesome Guide

In here you will find all your answers.

Just my 2c worth...hope it helps,

Rich

Edit: Setting up an SSD is pretty simple if you think it through beforehand. You don't have to follow all the steps in the guide for optimization, but you should read it through for the biggest tips such as setting your page file, disabling hibernation, limiting space for restore and backup functions, etc.

1 Just set the boot drive as the one you are going to install windows on.
2 The HDD will appear in windows after it has been formated in computer management or if it is already ntfs/fat32 it would show up in my computer right away.
3. avg has an option to scan drives/dirs ect.
4. for steam games you can use symbolic links. (guide in my sig) or other games/apps can be installed right on to the other drive.

The exact steps for configuring the boot order in the BIOS depends on which motherboard you have.

However, the installation process will be easy.  When you get to this part of the process, just select the drive.

Yes they will, although there is a chance that the storage drive may need to be initialized in Disk Management (which is an easy process).

It depends on the software, but usually all you have to do is select them.

If you install games to your storage drive, then you can just create "Shortcuts".  You can also launch these games by simply opening the Start Menu, typing the game's name, and then pressing Enter.  You can also "Pin" programs to the Taskbar (including games, because they are programs too).

I think the whole process will be surprisingly easy.

Any idea what would be best in that guide? I mean the top choices needed. Also, the one I linked is Windows 8. Should I just go with Windows 7?
