The "wimpy one from Onkyo" was likely MORE than enough to function correctly, but you just had a bad cable. A subwoofer cable from monoprice for $1 would have been just fine.
I am glad you got it sorted though.
Not always. I remember purchasing an Acoustic Research cable from Best Buy and it was utter garbage. It had so much resistance that my sub was constantly turning off unless the volume was up high. Replaced it with a sub cable from Blue Jeans Cable and haven't had a problem since.

There's more to wire just being made of copper(which most RCA plugs aren't made of). The cable's LCR(inductance, capacitance, and resistance) all have a role in the quality of the cable, along with the quality of it's termination, shield, etc...

Haha. No, it was not expensive. I have never spent a lot of money on a cable. I am not one of those $200 HDMI cable idiots. But it is a thick, high-quality cable, as opposed to the puny one that came with the system. And, more importantly, it fixed my issue!

Glad you got it sorted. From what you say sounds just like a bad cable.
