The "wimpy one from Onkyo" was likely MORE than enough to function correctly, but you just had a bad cable. A subwoofer cable from monoprice for $1 would have been just fine.

There's more to wire just being made of copper(which most RCA plugs aren't made of). The cable's LCR(inductance, capacitance, and resistance) all have a role in the quality of the cable, along with the quality of it's termination, shield, etc...
