[Examiner] Sony’s PlayStation 4 to support 4K resolution

Sony is planning on using the Playstation 4 to help push its new 4K resolution (aka Quad HD) HDTV sets much the same way it used the Playstation 3 to push Blu-ray according to a new report released on Wednesday.
Quote:
There will likely be a shortage of media that can support the 4K resolution for quite a while so Sony will likely hope that producing a games system that will support its TV technology will help sales. It helped make Blu-ray the de facto standard for HD movies and TV shows. It didn't help so much with 3DTV though.

This rumor (or belief) comes from the writer of BGR (not sure if he is reliable), but I'm wondering if this is good or bad.

They can support 4K all they want. one big factor is this hardly anyone will even own a 4K setup so IMO its almost worthless. Most of the console fan base are teens/kids and there are alot of older ish folks but I dont see any of them going out and paying a high price for a 4K TV.

I'm not sure the rumored PS4 hardware would be able to support this many pixels. thinking.gif

I see no way it would be able to support true 4k resolution. Maybe it can upscale it in some way but considering current gen console games barely support 1080p I don't see how Sony could future proof the PS4 to play 4k games and keep the cost reasonable.

Would these support it?

my graphics card supports 4k resolution too. does that mean I can play my games decently with 4k resolution? NOT AT ALL

It will only be for movies, pictures, etc, the PS4 won't have enough horsepower to run many great looking games at 4k.

As for the photo posted, 10GB XDR2? Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaake.
