I have a hp printer, which is very nice.My in-laws also have a hp printer, copier, scanner in one.Make sure to look at ink prices when looking. My old cannon printer has ink that cost $45.

If you like to move your printer around or don't have a outlet near, make sure that look at a wireless connection.

HP is a very solid brand when it comes to printers. What are you looking for it to do? Just print out papers? Would you like the option to print good quality photos? If it's just for printing out papers and mono things like that have you thought about getting a laser printer?

I'm using an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. It's way overkill for a student, but it works really well and I feel it's very good for the price.

If you can get away without colour and a scanner I would totally recommend:

HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer:

It is the printer that I will be using for university when I transfer next year.
From my experience, I wouldn't want to take an inkjet printer to college.
Colour laser printers costs a fortune.

I guess it depends on what your taking. I am taking Computer Science so the main thing I print is integrity reports and java/C++ source code which don't require colour.
The odd time I need to scan something I'm sure I can easier find a scanner in the library to use. Scan it to a flash drive or something.

Printer lasts forever on a toner cartridge and no worries about ink drying up in the cartridge or smudges on the paper. Inkjet toner costs a lot but it's cheaper in the long run (way more prints per cartridge)
The one I posted above is also wireless which I love at home. Not sure if I will be able to utilize it at uni though.

I also got mine on sale for $80 or $90. Pretty cheap.

Samsung makes a wired version for only $50 or so.
