Accessories for SMH10/STH10

Thread Starter
I've been looking at buying a case lab for the last few weeks. I will be waiting to see some more pictures of the Merlin line but I think the smh10/sth10 is right for me.

I've been coming Jim and he's been a great help bit I'm still trying to figure what else I need. I know I need 480mm rad mounts if I want to put rads in the top and bottom compartments.

Now I am looking at the front of the case. I believe I need to purchase flex bays for the front to allow for proper air flow, but which ones fit? I need 4 bays for my stuff (CD, fan controller, dual bay Res) so that leaves with what?

If someone can help me figure it out all I'd appreciate it. Don't want to finally get it all and realize I missed something and have to wait to get it before enjoying my new case!

Thanks in advance

The naming flex bays is confusing to customers. It's actually just 5.25" slots. SMH10 has 13 and STH10 has 17.

There are plates to cover 3 5.25" slots and plates for 1 5.25" slot. Any plate can go anywhere in the case.
Each slot has a guiding pin and it doesn't matter in which order you install the plates. With the SMH10 you could for exaple install 1 +1 + 3 +3 + 3 +1 +1. So you could install fan controller and dvd on the bottom and the res at the top.

The plates you can see on the pictures, those you get in the price of the case. So you'll get them even if you take other parts.

A ventilated alternative of the 3slot plate is MAC-221

There is also the MAC-113 which allows a fan to be installed

And MAC-148 is the ventilated version of a 1slot

For 3slot plates it's imo better to go for the MAC-113 instead of the MAC-221. If you later want to install extra hard drives, you can buy the MAC-203 which fits on the MAC-113 but not the MAC-221. Or if you need to adjust air flow with fans in the front, you can do it with MAC-113 and not with MAC-221.

edit: The owner's manual is a lot easier to overview all the parts btw. But sadly it doesn't get updated very often.
They could start using an extra part-timer in the shop I think. And expansion to Europe would be a lot easier if they could find a good partner to redistribute it here. Certainly with the new Merlin line, attention to CL is going to skyrocket.

Thanks StijnDP!

Would the MAC-162 (120.3 Flex-Bay Radiator Mount) work just the same and allow for fan installs? I think for the $5 extra bucks your right that the single fan mounts would be better. I dont think I would put a rad in the front if you can have 2 in the bottom.

Can a 360mm rad fit in the front? Of the STH10 probably right? But the SMH10 it was be in the way?

In order to get 2 rads in the bottom (I am thinking 320mm rads) each in p/p what is the maximum thickness the rads could be? any idea? Just wondering if anyone did the math and has it worked out already.

MAC-162 would cover 3full plates, allow 3fans installed and it would not obstruct anything you want to install under or above it.
Caution: When you install a rad in it, you will lose 1 5.25" above or below it because of the fittings. A 5.25" slot is 4,1mm. So 9x4,1mm means 36,9mm space for 3fans but that's excluding the small chamber with fittings on rads. You can also see it on the picture where the wholes for the fans are.

With your current need for 4 5.25" bays it would not be a problem with the STH10 but the SMH10 would likely be a problem with one of the devices sitting in the way of the fittings.

I don't have a STH10 or SMH10 to measure it but my guess is you will have 215mm of free space between the 2 rad mounts. Between the panel on the side and the rad mount you'll have 30mm space.
panel---30mm---rad mount--- 215mm free space ---rad mount---30mm---panel
A thick rad like XSPC RX series will still work because that's 63mm + 25mm + 25mm + 63mm space needed. But remember that you'd only have 39mm left which can be annoying for tubing.
You'll also start getting acoustic noise from air turbulence if you let both rads blow air in or both air out. If you let one blow in and the other out, there won't be turbulence noise but the second rad will cool with the hotter air from the first rad.
Can be solved by using less thick rads or only use push instead of push/pull (temperature wise, both options will be very close to eachother).

Also not to forget that with the SMH10 you have to fit the psu in the bottom. Here is a post that you'll find interesting.

It's the top chamber of a STH10 but that's an exact copy of both chamber in the STH10 and the bottom of a SMH10.
It shows you can fit 2x 120.3 together with a big psu in there. You can even do a 120.3 + 120.4.

For 100% accurate measuring you'll have to wait on Jim or an owner of STH10/SMH10.

On the STH10/SMH10, the space between the radiator mounts is 218mm - keep on mind that one bank of fans on either side is outside of that.

There are two schools of thought on the 120.3 rad mount and three MAC-113 mounts: The MAC-113 mounts are more flexible in terms of positioning in the 5.25" bays while some people think the 120.3 mount has a cleaner look and and will mount a radiator as well. If you can position it at the top or the bottom of the bays, you can prevent the barbs from obstructing a bay.
