ok, don't know how many people are still following this buuuuut,

I GOT IT IN!!

yes, i actually got time over thanksgiving to give it one last shot; basically i noticed that a credit card goes through my PII x3, but gets stuck in the 955, so i did a bit more work, and with a bit persuading i got it in the socket!

now, it still wont boot because about 6 pins are missing, but i think i can get those fixed pretty easily! updates with pics of it in the socket coming soon and hopefully of it running successfully too!

I finally decided to see if there was any more progress on this.

good job. How are you planning on replacing the missing pins, though?

well, i have soem old p4 proc. from which i hope to salvage some pins. Other than that, i might look into the pins from a dvi port or something along those lines, as long as i can create a full circuit between the pin and pin hole, i think i'll be ok. of course, if i ever switch the mobo, i would have to switch out the pins individually as well tongue.gif. I'm actually not so frightened by the pins that i have to replace, as that's been done before, it was getting the processor to even fit into the socket that was a nightmare!

Wow what a star. Hope you get some replacement pins in there and it boots up!! What a great effort mate - and I was crapping myself over 6-7 bent pins a couple of months ago!

why thank you, im honored!
Well i'll hopefully have some time tomorrow to test some theories. First one is whether or not a cpu pin can be unsoldered/ taken out of the donor cpu (1.7 ghz p4) using a soldering iron, if not, i will have to cut them as best as possible and hope they are long enough. Otherwise its on to the dvi/vga pins and whatever else i can find thats conductive and small enough smile.gif

magnet wire could replace a pin, i tried some in an old mother board socket and closed the lever, it gripped the wire. it's varnished though, you'll have to heat it with a lighter then wipe it with fine steel wool to clean it off for soldering. Then wipe with alcohol. You could also crush the wire to give it a small flat foot before you solder it.

I was holding up the whole board by just that wire in the socket.
