Yeah, It would be. Infact the 7950 that I've got now is rather silent. It just spins up once I start playing BF3. I've had a few cards that rattled under noise though.
You might be interested in underclocking it to produce less heat and less noise too - Just a suggestion smile.gif

I doubt it will need underclocking, it's a fairly small card with a good cooler, so it will stay nice and cool and low noise. Even my card stays cool and very quiet during full load in Furmark thumb.gif

The IceQ cooler are rather good yes, mine gets rather loud with stuff like furmark etc though. But that's just my fan curve. The way I see if there's no point in getting a card with a good cooler if you're never going to use it wink.gif

Yea but I don't to use it, the fan get's to around 40% in games, which is completely soundless, and still only get's to maybe 60-66c or so.

I used to control the fan myself but now I just leave it to AMD Overdrive to do. biggrin.gif

He got an XFX card, and I bought a sapphire 4850 recently, it has a tiny cooler with a tiny fan, and it is unbelievably quiet and cool running.

Long time lurker, first time poster!
I am quite familiar with building rigs, except in the area of video cards. Could I have your esteemed opinions on a video card that is quiet - fanless or otherwise - for my new rig?
  • I am NOT a gamer, and DO NOT PLAY GAMES OFTEN/AT ALL. Being able to play some may be nice though - even at a low FPS.
  • I am currently using 2 monitors (one for e-mail/browsing, one for programming) - DUAL DVI OUTPUT, and 1 HDMI? is needed as I may be expanding to 3 soon
  • I do watch movies
  • Budget < $200
  • I have heard that AMD Radeon would be the way to go... is that true?


I can vouch on the Sapphire 6870 being dead silent.

For the GTX 500 series and the hd 6800 series, Nvidia is better on the high end, while AMD is better mid range (the 550 ti was a joke)

For the GTX 600 and hd 7000 series you're better with a radeon if you want a sub-300 card. Their higher end card are pretty much tied, but the Nvidia's are more expensive, somehow.
