- What happened?
Uploaded multiple images making sure to select the files in the order that I want them to appear. Uploaded images had been randomly moved around, requiring me to open each one to find out where it belongs before moving it. - Are you able to reproduce this problem consistently?
Yes, it pretty much happens every time I upload multiple images. - What steps did you take to reproduce this problem?
Just upload 4+ images that you want to appear in a particular order. - What action did you expect to occur when this bug appeared?
I expected the file order in the selection dialog (looks like: "ME3-1-NoAA.jpg" "ME3-1-SMAA.jpg" "ME3-2-NoAA.jpg" "ME3-2-SMAA.jpg" ) to be preserved. - Browser, active browser addons, and operating system:
Firefox 15, Windows 7 x64 - URL where the issue occurs:

Verified, however, not a bug. The file browser is apparently a browser component - we don't retain any data on what order they are selected in (when selecting multiple images in the same upload). You'll need to upload them individually, or move them into the order you want them in if you upload them all at once.
I figured that might be the case but shouldn't it at least sort them alphabetically (which only requires the filenames)? My example above would still be in the correct order if that was the case.

Apparently that's not really up to us. And if it were, I'm not sure that'd be worth the work...not many people upload long lists of files that they named in order. A few (you, myself, some other people), but probably not enough to really justify it when it's pretty simple to just move things around the vast majority of the time, if necessary.
Understood. I'm still going to try and find out which attribute decides the order (if it's not completely random). Will post back if I find anything.

When I tested it, it seemed random. I used the same 4 files and selected them in different orders and they always came up totally randomly. I think one out of 6 times or so it came up in the same order, and it was definitely never anything like alphabetical. I imagine there is SOME logic to it, but I don't know what it is. If you find out, plz school me on it, I'm curious.

I manually checked the selection strings to eliminate them from the equation. For a batch of 8 images, it looked like this after manually moving image 8 from the front to the end:
"Torchlight1.jpg" "Torchlight2.jpg" "Torchlight3.jpg" "Torchlight4.jpg" "Torchlight5.jpg" "Torchlight6.jpg" "Torchlight7.jpg" "Torchlight8.jpg"
Tested with a batch of 8 images and another batch of 4 images. Got the following orderings:
2 1 3 4 5 6 7 8
2 1 3 4 5 6 7 8
1 3 4 5 6 7 8 2
2 1 3 4 5 6 7 8
2 3 4 5 6 7 8 1
2 3 1 4
2 3 1 4
2 3 1 4
1 2 3 4
It's definitely not completely random. I checked file selection order, name, size and date modified and found no correlation. If you look closely at my test results, all of the unsorted examples can be alphabetically sorted by moving only one of the numbers. It's interesting but not enough to solve the mystery.
Does this pattern match your test results?

Good news, the new HTML5 based uploader no longer has this glitch. Just tested it and the images are always properly sorted based on filename. This may now be considered [Resolved]. ![]()
