No 6 pin pci-e power connector on Intel DZ77SL-50K

1. I've read on some websites that this pin out connector on the newer motherboards is used by the graphics cards for drawing additional power, but I thought that the graphics cards drew power from their own power connectors. Which is true?

2. Secondly as far as I know the Intel DZ77SL-50K does not have the above mentioned 6-pin power connector for the pci-e slot. Can it still support the nvidia GTX 680 (both reference and non-reference cards.)

The 6-pin connector is not built on the motherboard but on the actual graphics card. If a card requires more power than the pci-e slot can provide (which I think is 75w) you will plug the 6 or 8 pins connectors straight from your psu into the graphics card. And yes you can use a gtx680 with that motherboard assuming you have a decent power supply.

thanks for the reply.

But here's an article about an msi motherboard. Read the second line of the second paragraph.

here another link for the MSI mobo that mentions this connector.

http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?p=14667273

search for this para:
Quote:
Moving over to the memory slot area, on the right we see the power and reset buttons and the OC Genie button which as an automatic overclocking feature. There's voltage check points and an auxiliary 6pin power connector which can be used to provide supplemental power to the GPUs. A debug LED readout can be seen on the left.

Unless you are running qseveral GPUs and/or are OC'ing with LN2 then you don't need that extra connector. When you have such an extreme setup the GPUs can draw more power from the motherboards than under normal scenarios. Under these conditions the extra power connector is beneficial.
I have never used the supplemental power connector with my 470 which draws a ton of power (when fully OC'd on water).

You may be thinking of the Intel P67 boards that do have an auxillary sata or molex power connector on the board that are recommended for use with vid cards over 450 watts.
I don't believe any of the Intel Z68 or Z77 boards have or require this auxillary connector. Also I took a look at that MSI board and can see the additional 6 pin connector next to the 24 pin connector. That's gotta be an MSI exclusive and not an industry standard as I've never seen that on any Asus, Gigabyte, Intel ect. boards.
