Server OS

Thread Starter
I'm planning to set up a home server which will primarily act as a file server, LAMP server as well as streaming media to a few computers. I would also like to fold on the server.

Maybe down the road I could set up a DNS or DHCP server but thats not a primary requirement.

Due to the many many OS available out there I'm having trouble deciding.

Some requirements:
Able to run headless (can be accessed and managed remotely)
Virtualisation capability would be a plus

I have considered running freenas, but the main thing that's holding me back is there is no native folding client available for freebsd. Any input would be appreciated smile.gif

Also, I'm relatively proficient in Linux and not scared of the terminal lol

Take a look at CentOS. It is basically a free, community supported version of RedHat, which is what most major companies run their servers with.

CentOS will do everything you've said. Windows server 2008 r2 I found easier to deal with the DNS/DHCP server than with my centos 6 server.

For the record guys, CentOS is not just a "debranded" RHEL. There's shared code and binary compatibility, but they are different projects managed by different organisations.

@OP

Depending on your hardware resources, you could use Ubuntu or CentOS as the host OS, then use VirtualBox or KVM in headless mode to create VMs to do the jobs you need (DHCP&DNS, LAMP, media server). You could also use Webmin to administer the host and the guests.

I currently run pfSense in a VM for my network. It runs brilliantly. :-)

Thats a really good idea! I think I'll try that out and see how it works out. Hardware should not be a problem since I run a dual quad xeon server I got for a bargain smile.gif

Guess its time to upgrade the ram.

Thanks for all the help guys

Also, do you use an additional NIC to run pfsense? or do you just use it for the firewall? Been wanting to try out m0n0wall for some time. No idea if it'd be useful in a home network though.

I'd look into ESXi or Xen, much more powerful Hypervisors...

Installed CentOS, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Ubuntu Server.

Can't seem to decide which I like better. All have their strengths and weaknesses.

Choices choices..
