Server OS - Page 2

post #11 of 19
Just got with 2008R2 and use Hyper-V. smile.gif

I run Untangle for my home firewall, but I do it on a physical box. I have had it set up as a VM, but I like the idea of having a physical box better. Just makes things easier for me in my home.

There is another option: OpenSuse. It even has a wizard for setting up Xen virtual machines. thumb.gif While Redhat is big in the US, SuSE is one of the preferred enterprise Linux solutions for Europe.

Or if you just want a minimal base OS for running VMs, then either ESXi or Proxmox.

I certainly wouldn't run Windows Server if you want a minimal footprint host OS. smile.gif

true, I guess the word rebuild would be better?

In my environment I use pfSense just as a DNS & DHCP server, rather than a router/firewall, so I just bridge it onto my existing physical NIC.

If you want to use CentOS or Ubuntu, with KVM as your hypervisor, you can use ConVirture to manage them. There's a free/community edition. smile.gif

You may as well just run Proxmox then

@Plan9

Isn't Proxmox limited in certain ways compared to Ubuntu or CentOS with KVM or Xen? That's what I've heard anyway...

Not from what I've seen. In fact it's more powerful than ESXi from what I've seen thus far.
I'm still playing around with Proxmox though - putting it through its paces.

I would run CentOS 5/6 with Xen PV or HVM (if you go along with HVM, you can run Windows domUs smile.gif). As said before, you could run the services inside a VM.
