Xonar sound card - Page 5

Thread Starter
Well loaded Windows and all the updates plus a few programs and the new sound card was never detected. I tried all PCI-E slots and the computer won't even recognize there is new hardware much less be able to load a driver. I wiped my hard drive and reloaded Windows thinking maybe there was a Windows update that might have done something. Upon first restart with a fresh OS and nothing loaded, no new hardware was detected. So, a new motherboard and a third new sound card. I just don't get it.......... the original sound card worked perfectly for 4 months. Now I'm going to be RMA'ing a motherboard that is most likely perfectly fine and in turn all I have is the same situation but with a slightly newer motherboard.

Yup, this is after the new motherboard. I didn't try to clean the contacts. I even tried a new power cord. But, I did go out and buy a Creative sound card tonight because I needed to narrow down where this was coming from. The Creative card was recognized immediately. Haven't had a chance to adjust the sound yet because I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Windows again just to be safe. But I listened to it compared to the onboard Realtek ALC898. There was noticeable bass improvements on the Creative card over the ALC898 but it wasn't significant. I decided to go with the standard X-Fi Extreme instead of the Recon 3D because I'm not a big gamer, supposedly the X-Fi is better for music. I'm really not going to try and figure out why the Asus cards don't work any more on this, if I bang my head against the wall any more............rolleyes.gif

That really makes my heart sink. I love Asus they make great stuff especially there mother boards. Heck my Friends mother board had parts fall off from abuse and old age and it still runs. My Xonar has been good to me how ever it wasn't a walk in the park I learned the hard way why the unofficial drivers are better. It would be really cool if you could do me one favor and not totally write off Asus and give them another try in further future.

EDIT: there is an FAQ here and actually the Xonars are better for music and X-Fis are better for gaming.

EDIT: here ya go

I hear ya, trust me I notice a difference in quality. Not quite sure if I'm ready to give up but I'm not going to waste any more time on this. I'm only willing to return so many products, pay for shipping, restocking, reloading Windows and changing motherboards before I've had enough. My frustration level is starting to peak. I need this computer and I just don't have the time to keep doing this. I've troubleshot every possible scenario as you've seen by this thread. It's a shame that Asrock and/or Asus expects people to assume their high end cards would actually be compatible with other brand name products.

Thanks for that link! thumb.gif

To be honest with you, I'm quite impressed with the onboard sound on this Formula OC. So much so I'm probably going to use it over the CL sound card. The Realtek ALC898 is pretty good. I've got a higher end-ish 2.1 speaker setup. Not sure how the 898 sounds with high dollar 5.1 or 7.1 but it sure leaves a real nice alternative if you don't want to mess with another piece of hardware and drivers.

You should be happy with a 2.1, if any think i think the 2.1 is Superior cause surround sound only works and sound right if placed JUST right and doesn't really work well in a confined area such as a computer desk. then again i have never tried one but, i know if i want serious sound quality headphones are the way to go and i think many audiophiles will tell you the same. The set up i would like is a nice and mean nice 2.1 and nice head phones.
