HD 7950 OC vs GTX 670 OC vs GTX 660 Ti OC

hardocp has done something which is unprecedented. they have pitted three custom factory overclocked cards - HD 7950, GTX 670, GTX 660 Ti in all out max overclocking performance comparison. no other website has done this before. kudos to them. And surprisingly the GTX 670's performance superiority is completely destroyed.

Edit: Forceware 305.37 and Catalyst 12.8 were used for the review

Finally nice to see an apple's to apple's comparison.

That new driver and the recent price drop makes the 7950 a great deal.

Suprised at how the OC 660 kept up in most games but theirs as couple benchmarks that stand out.

Skyrim and Witcher 2 at 1600P with no AA it falls behind by 8 fps. At 1080P with AA Skyrim at max settings is 11 FPS. These are understandable. (compared to 670. Falls behind even more to the 7950 so Nvidia fanboys that keep saying 660TI FTW over a 7950 kookoo.gif)

But the major standout that I am wondering why it falls behind so much is Arkham city at 1080P max settings. For competing within 5-10 FPS in every game and benchmark why the sudden 20 FPS in this game.

As a 670 owner I was pleased with my purchase a couple months back for price to performance. But if I was making the decision today hands down the 7950 wins.

Batman AC with MSAA 4x clearly proves what the bandwidth handicap and the loss of 8 ROP compared to GTX 670 can do to GTX 660 Ti. In fact even a HD 7870 at 1.25 Ghz core would be faster than the GTX 660 Ti OC.
This is exactly the reason why people who buy GTX 660 Ti are going to really run out of steam in the big titles of 2013 like Crysis 3 and Metro Last Light.

I understand that but even BF 3 with MSAA 4x and the other games the drop isn't so big. Makes me really question the longetivity of the 660TI if any more games are made like Arkham City to hog resources when everythings turned up. 20 FPS drop is HUGE and 660TI buyers are in for a real suprise if that trend catches on.

Nice results from the HD7950. but GTX 670s memory overclock is very poor in that benchmark. most users I've seen can at least achieve 6.6 GHz.
My GTX 670 has 6.2 GHz at stock and this Asus has only 6.3 GHz which is pathetic.
I guess if the 670 memory was 7.0 GHz+ it will beat this 7950 in most tests.
Nvidia also didn't release a new WHQL drivers from very long time. 301.42 WHQL is very old and 304.79 didn't add much to it.

Metro 2033 with DOF and AAA pushes the GTX 660 Ti behind GTX 580. this is what happens when you are bandwidth constrained

In the games that GTX 670 loses like skyrim and witcher 2 the margin is not small. memory overclocking can't give a 10% - 15% increase. atmost you can get a 3 - 5% better score and that too only if bandwidth is limiting perf. the close games like max payne 3 and BF3 will still be close with the GTX 670 maybe ending on par . Batman AC with FXAA is better on GTX 670 and thats a fact. With Batman AC MSAA HD 7950 is faster and the gap will increase with 8x.

I understand and have seen this plenty of times since I read almost all the 660TI's reviews. But even in that benchmark its only 8 FPS behind a 670. Nothing crazy just normal scaling. Lets say we overclock that 670 that still only 15 FPS max in the metro benchmark. But 20 FPS is a very significant drop.

Again shown in that chart above when compared stock to stock and OC to OC 660TI vs 670

I can assure you I can get 10-13% increase from memory OC alone from 6.2 to 7.1 GHz . The experience when I was playing Skyrim to be specific. I own the GTX 670 and I based it on facts not in theories like how you do thumb.gif .
Also it is unfair to wait for AMD drivers to mature and to improve performance and don't wait for Nvidia's outdated 3 months old drivers. 301.42 is only two weeks after GTX 670s release.
