Wait, were you using non-ECC/non-unbuffered RAM in the first place...?

The buffers provide a register between the memory and the memory controller
And the ECC provides a checksum control system for 1-bit error corrections

Both can be essential depending on the CPU/MB combo...

He may have been using ecc registered memory, which is not supported on any of the socket 1155 server boards. They only support and work with unbuffered ecc memory. I found out the hard way myself as well

RAM is either ECC or non-ECC. Also, it is either registered (buffered) or unbuffered (un-registered)

Registered (buffered) = allows more DIMMs to be installed in a system

Both decrease performance and have higher costs.

ecc isn't very important for home builds or even for number crunching servers, but for data servers it is a must. will you really kick your self over +2-5$ per gb as you would if you lose everything stored on it? unlikely. still, this isn't a file server so you decided for your self. support for ecc in the main difference between xeons and i-series procs.
