Time to Upgrade....

Thread Starter
After 4 years I am planning on building a new gaming rig - will be for gaming, some video editing, general office stuff, etc.

Looking for the best system that will last, OC ability a plus.

I prefer Intel, had good luck with ASUS and eVGA boards - but want the most stable.

Budget is open - to make it easier lets say $2,000

Thanks for the help....

I don't see why you need to upgrade though. Your rig is perfect for any game right now

If you're not doing anything intensive, don't see why you would upgrade either tongue.gif But if you want to do it just for the hell of it
Go for a 2600k/3770k, g skill 12 or 16 GB ram, Throw in corsair/mushkin SSD's, nVidia 680, P67/Z77 Sabertooth, 800D, And the list goes on smile.gif If you want links, just ask and i'll post them. Ofcourse these are all opinions on what I think, but with $2,000, you can build a very nice PC with a nice loop smile.gif

What games do you play? Right now, IMO, hold off the upgrade for another year and get Haswell. I don't see a need for an upgrade yet. The Q9550 is a bottleneck to the GTX580 but it's nothing too big.

Get an SSD it'll help with the making windows and everything in it feel more responsive. Other than that, wait for haswell to get a new platform and upgrade your GTX580 to the 7 series or later.

I highly doubt the q9550 is bottlenecking the 580 right now

But yeah, wait for haswell.

If you really want to upgrade, an ssd is safest, but you have to have windows 7 to geet trim commands

Hi all,

Back from my hoidays....so thanks for the feedback....I had decided to wait, but I am experiencing considerable stability / memory / mobo issues lately.

I have traced it back to my memory sockets...so i am down to 4GB... frown.gif

So, my wife has suggested i upgrade.....who am i to refuse?!!

So the only other change is i will be doing more video editing - i have hours of video to import and edit into a DVD....so i am not sure if that changes anything.

So i'd appreciate any links or suggestions.....if i can re-use stuff then more to spend in other areas smile.gif

Is it worth re-using my video card in the new system?

I have a NAS that backs up my documents/ photos - should i bother building a RAID again or go SSD?

Keep vista? tongue.gif

yes, Id keep that 580, still a very strong card smile.gif
As for the boards.. Wish I knew which asrock and GB boards they had, But from what you have listed, I'd pick the PRO, No issues with the ram from me. G.skill is my fav company ( disregard sig tongue.gif )..
And yeah, I mean since your wife gave you go ahead, Grab that i7... This is Overclock.net anyways, since when are we in the habit of telling people not to upgrade??? lol
