Time to Upgrade.... - Page 2

Grab that Z77 V Pro, keep the 580, and get as much as GSkill Ripjaws as you want! Grab a 2600k/3770k too! Oh, and some WD hard drives if you need some extra space thumb.gif

Personally I love G.Skill's products. They have always been solid performers for me and always work right out of the packaging without any hassle. I wouldn't think twice about vouching for their RAM or recommending it to ya.

As for motherboard, check out the UD5H, as for ASRock, take a look at their Extreme 4. Both solid motherboards, although the Pro is a nice board as well, figured since you listed Gigabyte and ASRock that's what I'd recommend.

As for the CPU you CAN get a 3770K it is a nice processor, however if you're only rendering 1-2 times a year then all the rest gaming/office work you won't really need the i7 and could skate away with a 3570K. But, it is all up to you. Since you've waited 4 years to upgrade, and may plan so to wait just as long, I would then recommend the i7.

Also take a look at a SSD. They will enrich your computer experience and spoil to a point where a mech. drive just won't cut it anymore and when you have to use one, you're just mad. tongue.gif

Goodluck and let us know what you decide upon! thumb.gif

As for the boards.. Wish I knew which asrock and GB boards they had, But from what you have listed, I'd pick the PRO, No issues with the ram from me. G.skill is my fav company ( disregard sig tongue.gif )..
And yeah, I mean since your wife gave you go ahead, Grab that i7... This is Overclock.net anyways, since when are we in the habit of telling people not to upgrade??? lol

Thanks...I am checking UK sites as a potential option to order via web...and checking the fees for US import rolleyes.gif Gotta love VAT tax...

THe local store has these Gigabyte boards:

GA-Z77X-UD3H, and GA-Z77X-UD5H

Any reccomendations on cooling? I usually stick with air - as i dont have time to maintain a water cooling system.....

Refer to my post above. UD5H get's my vote. smile.gif

And honestly, I've used a Thermaltake Frio, and a Hyper 212+ both perform relatively well for the price. I'd get one of those or if you want some extreme air cooling check out the Noctua NH-D14.

Thanks - just saw they have the UD5H.....i'll check it out.

SSD - I used it for the HTPC I built before moving to Finland and it works great....but I tend to like RAID arrays for security, size, etc..

What would you suggest? a SSD for the OS and HDD RAID or go all SSD (and making sure i am backup my stuff...)?

Pulled the trigger on:

Gigabyte Z77 D5H
i7 3770K
16 GB G.Skill
Samsung 128SSD

Same case, PSU, Video card, OS

Got it built and running, loaded the base OS (UPDATE: Ordered Win 7 )

Odd thing was when I shut it down the fans and board stayed lit, screen went black....had to press the power button to kill the fans....I'll check the connections tomorrow...but any ideas?

Gonna be a sweet upgrade man, you'll love it!

As for when you shut it down, did the computer have update to install? Because the board, fans, etc will all stay going/lit until the computer is completely done shutting down.

No updates...a "normal" shutdown....screen goes blank w/no signal and it sits....fans running....i can use he power button and it will **** off, no error on re-boot (e.g. Windows did not shut down properly....)

The Win 7 DVD is comnig this week, so not going to sweat it until after I re-install....

I'll post pics if you guys are interested..
