Building a new rig. Need some help with it.

Currently im using a pretty old PC.

Specs:

- 2GB RAM DDR2
- Intel Core Q6600 3,0Ghz
- EVGA Geforce GTX 570 (Keeping this for my new rig)
- 500GB Samsung HDD (Sata II)
- 750w Recom Power Supply (Keeping this for my new rig)

I want to upgrade. because my videocard is being slightly bottlenecked by the q6600 (Tried overclocking, didnt really get very far)

I used the 'PC-Builder' function on a website i always buy my computer partts (Alternate.nl), this is the result:
Let me know if anything needs to be improved.

Motherboard: ASRock X79 Extreme3
CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-2500K
RAM: G.Skill 8 GB DDR3-1866 Kit

Thats it. I already have the EVGA Geforce GTX570 to play my games on. (I dont care for the 60+fps. 40 FPS on 1440x900 is good enough for me!). So i want to keep things a little cheap

The price of the motherboard, CPU, and ram is € 409,70
Is this is a decent price?

Thanks alot for the help smile.gif

Well sir, the x79 platform is not compatible with the 2500k. For x79, you'd be looking at the 3820/3930k/3960x cpus and the like. What will you be doing with your rig ? What resolution do you game at ? What is your budget and where will you be buying from ?

Edit: nevermind, I'm a moron and I see your resolution right there in front of my face. Will this be a primarily gaming rig ?

Hehe no problem smile.gif

Oh so stupid of me not to notice that. Ill change it right away.
My budget is $420 (Mind you, i already have a powersupply, HDD, and videocard).
Its primarily for gaming. 30-40FPS is good enough for me.

The site i use is http://www.alternate.nl/html/configurator/builder/structure/page.html?componentType=required&kind=pcBuilder
Its a dutch site, but i think you will understand what everything is. it would be great if you would help me with this, because im a total noob when it comes to gaming rigs. I do fix PC's for my work, but gaming knowledge aint real high.

I just want to play BF3 maxed out. (Possible on SP, but MP stutters when playing with 32+ players. thats CPU related right? the more players, the more laggy)

I would go with something like this. very solid rig and that 570 will decimate games at your resolution. That's an epic cooler which will be needed if you plan on doing any sort of overclocking. That board is very nice and future proof, as much as such things can be anyway. If you have a solid cooler already, go ahead and disregard that. And of course there are cheaper coolers you can take a look at. Honestly, you may not need to overclock that ivy chip at your resolution. Definitely get the K version though, just to cover you in the future. Also, they hold their value better. A CM 212+ or something similar would be half the price and get you to 4.3 comfortably. This upgrade will blow you away and you'll be super happy with it. You can go sandy bridge and z68 or even p67 and still you'd have a very noticeable difference in speed and save some money. Ivy is 10% faster and sometimes much less. I personally will stick with sandy until haswell, but I got really lucky with my cpu. You can put a 30 euro cooler on a sandy chip and get to 4.7 with ease and possibly even higher. This would also save you money on the mobo. This setup would dominate BF3 at that resolution. I would guess a solid 40 fps constant and at times much higher.

Thats perfect! An even faster CPU, for the same price.

I think ill buy the CPU cooler at a later time. since i do not have the money for that now.
Thanks alot for your help!

REP+ for you ! smile.gif Ill send you a private message for further questions if you dont mind.

Once more, thanks! thumb.gif

Of course, happy to help. Here's a sandy build I would be proud to own myself.

You would only notice the difference in speeds in benchmarks most likely. The ivy cpus are faster clock for clock, but in my mind not so much as to justify the really noticeable increase in heat they produce. Certainly they are good chips, but in my mind they are better served for people with lots of money in their cooling system. In day to day use, you would not notice a difference. Skip the cooler and you can get to 4.0 easily on the stock cooler. If you have an aftermarket solution, you could make it to 4.4 comfortably or likely better. I've never seen a 2500k that wouldn't do 4.4ghz.
