building secondary rig, suggestions on cpu and motherboard

Thread Starter
I am building a pc for my sister before she starts school, as she asked me.

i already have 2 6950`s 1gb model, an 800w psu so im not worried about that.

i was told that the bulldozer chips like teh fx 4100 are garbage but id like some opinions. its going to be used for basic computing. what would be best.

even a dual core intel with hhyperthreading?

thanks!

So, basic day to day web surfing ? Any games at all ? What is your budget ? Do you prefer amd or intel ? The 4100 is more than capable for most users. It's not a garbage chip at all. People that tell you that are ignorant fanboys. Is it the best buy in it's price range ? Likely not, but it has it's place. So you need everything but a gpu and a power supply ? If I were building a day to day websurfing type rig, I'd probably buy used parts. A decent core 2 duo chip and a 775 board could be had for way cheap and would likely be more than enough for sis's needs. If you wanted to use newer tech, I'd go H61 and i3 2100. If you live near a MC, you can pick up a combo like that for cheap. A budget would really help.

For basic computing? That's all?

Probably an AMD a6 APU + cheap FM1 (A75 version) motherboard

Or if you plan on putting one of the 6950s in, a pentium g630 + cheap H61 mobo. There's a pentium g630 + Asrock H61 U3S3 combo on newegg right now for $118.

The pentium is going to be a stronger overall CPU, but only if you add in a discrete video card. For a CPU with no GPU, the AMD a6 is the best choice.

With a 6950, the pentium will be able to handle moderate-heavy gaming.
