Not a very big cooling difference from Hyper 212 Evo... - Page 3

Alright fellas, gonna let the thermal paste sit in a bit. I have a question about how much stress I should put the Evo under.

It's INCREDIBLY quiet compared to the stock 8120 fan, so I can't complain. I've just fooled around with the settings so that the fan would rotate faster. Right now it's at about 1100 rpm and the cpu reads at 42 degrees. The computer has been on all day so 42 degrees isn't too bad. It was at 45 before I set up the rpms. Question here is, how much percentage of the fan should I use? At 42 degrees it's using 64% power. It's at 80% once the cpu hits 50 degrees. Is it safe to say I could run the fan at around 80% under no/light load and then at 100% once it hits 50? I want to sit under 50 while doing light work and a max temp that's as far away from 60 degrees would be nice. I figure 100% should be enough to keep me under 61 degrees for now. Once I get an overclock set in we'll see how that works out too...

I don't want to push the fan too hard non stop and watch it explode on me someday. On another night, I decided to open up the side of my chassis so heat can escape a bit better. My chassis fans are going at around 1200rpm, which is 100% for them.

So hang on, is your CPU running at 42C on idle? That's quite high, I've hot my Phenom II OC'ed to 3.7ghz, and I'm using some extremely cheap TiM and it idles at around 26c or so. And my cooler is probably about the same as yours when it comes to idle temps.

And as for a overclock, with the temps you are getting now I Wouldn't even think of it until those temps drop to atleast 30c at idle, what are you're current load temps?

Now someone gets it wink.gif I'm currently watching a video which does raise temperature a few degrees, however I'm at 40 degrees right now. I've set the fan to use 80% load at around 43 degrees and hit 100% load at 50 degrees. My vcore temps are at 42 degrees each. I've mentioned that my cpu seems to be however hot as the vcore is, or near it. Not sure if that's a big deal. Motherboard is at 34 degrees. If this has anything to do with my chassis, it's possible. It's not a very big chassis. My motherboard just about fits into it, the evo is just big enough so that I can close the case. Though the case is open right now anyway.

I'll post my voltages again. As I'm looking now in AI suite 2 it seems to like jumping around. I was sure that I'd disabled anything auto so that my voltages would stay stable. It seems to jump between 1,080 to 1,280v or so. I'm double checking everything to see if any data conflicts though all my voltages shouldn't be jumping around. With cool n' quiet off, my CPU shouldn't be registering as pulling back either but it does.

Just went into my BIOS. Wrote down all relevant things I could find, turned off ALL c states and my cpu seems to be staying at 3.1ghz like a good little boy. However, without AI suite 2 to control the fan speed manually my cpu temp went up to 52 degrees just while in the bios... WHILE IN THE BIOS. WTH. Anyway, I wrote down everything I could find. I have no idea what any of it means, though I'm sure most of it is normal.

CPU BUS/Peg frequency - 200
CPU/NB Frequency - Auto. I can change it manually ranging from 1200-3200mhz
HT Link speed - Auto. Can change from 800-2600MHZ
CPU spread - Auto
PCIe spread - Auto
CPU voltage freq - Manual
VRM fixed freq - 300
CPU power duty control - It can either be T. probe thermal or c. probe current. No idea what that means, it's set at thermal
CPU man (main?) voltage 1.260v auto
cpu/nb manual voltage 1.225v auto
CPU VDDA voltage 2.500v auto
Dram voltage 1.512v auto

Once again, turned off all c states to voltage and cpu seems more stable. CPU is now back down to 40 degrees thanks to the evo, however hitting 52 while in bios under 600rpms for fan is still insane...

Yes it is, there must be something else causing it, just a case of finding out what.

I know Bulldozers run hot but that's usually only after a good Overclock, on stock settings they are supposed to run quite cool, especially on a Hyper 212.

We know it's not the TiM, and we knows it not a OC, or too much Vcore, so I wonder what's making it run so hot thinking.gif

AS5 takes a while to settle. I've been using Ceramique for a while and I have no complaints. Settles nicely and quickly.

Btw, I saw a huge difference in terms of noise and performance ditching the Hyper 212+ and going back to a Silver Arrow. Only trade off its huge! But, its definitely worth it thumb.gif

I think he's using Antec Furmula 6, not that ancient, what's it called, AS5 think lachen.gif

Yea I could imagine how good the Silver arrow is, as you say, it IS the size of a small planet. wink.gif

I just got the Evo. I do make money, though I've already put over a grand into this computer. I'm not looking to spend more and more money. I don't HAVE to overclock the thing, it'd be nice, though my main concern is that it's running THAT MUCH HOTTER than other users who have their thing overclocked. I did one more compound swap, did the pea size method. I'll let this one be it and let it settle in, I wasn't confident if the last one was a good application. I did order some Antec 7 since I'm running low on the 6, but don't really plan to use it anytime soon. I am keeping the side of the fan open and have another small fan that I can use to blow air into the computer. I don't really see a need for it unless I'm putting the thing under load. The cpu is at 37 degrees right now, outside fan not on. I've yet to put the thing under stress since it has cooled off. I'm sure it'll still be running idle 37-42 degrees. I think the thermal swap helped a bit as it seems to be running cooler than before, but once again it has yet to heat up properly due to some load.

I really don't get it. Could the case be attributed to such a heat spike when my custom fan settings aren't on? The side of the case is now open, my top fan is working properly, the cpu fan is blowing outwards so that the heat doesn't bundle up. Then the front fan does whatever it does, it's not greatly located. The joy of a computer, this is a good reason as to why I avoided owning a computer that I use heavily. Then again I sure do love it wink.gif

One final thing as I don't think anyone has replied to it. Vcore temps, are they supposed to average high 30s to high 40s? I've read that they can withstand some pretty high temps, much higher than the 8120s 61 degree limit. Just checking.

Alrighty people, just performed a 5 minute OCCT test. No errors were present I set it so that it would shut off at 60 degrees, max temps were a stable 52 degrees that jumped once to 53 and then stood steady at 52. I didn't use the outside fan, so good news is the thing isn't reaching shut off temperatures.

With that said, how do we feel about attempting a mild overclock, with the max hitting 4.0ghz. I'd be having to do it outside of the Bios due to the fan not keeping up with the heat while in the BIOS. I can attempt small jumps and then perform an OCCT test to monitor the max temperature rise.

Let's not forget that I can't think of a time I'll EVER be using 100% cpu load, the most being when i'm rendering video or something of the like. So I'll possibly be looking at 48-50 degrees while under load of a game or rendering. Food for thought... Going to go ahead and try some OC settings, then do 5 minute stress tests each.

3.1ghz - 52-53c max

3.3ghz - 54c max

3.5ghz - 55-56c max

3.6 - 58c max

Not much of an OC, though I'll take anything really. I'm not braving going past 58c and for now I'm going to stay at stock speed until I'm confident that mid 50s aren't going to destroy my cpu.

As far as the new fan working better, it certainly seems so. I'm no longer getting 52 degree loads, under a game I was hitting 43 max. My low end use to idle seems to range from 38-43 degrees. Still not as good as others are getting it, though considering my game load is 2 degrees less than my idle load was before all this, I'd say it's a pretty good change!

What case are you using, and how many fans does it have.

Also, do you have two or just one fan on your cooler? If you have one fan, is it pulling air through the cooler, or is it pushing air through the cooler.
