[GI] Remedy: Next-Gen consoles are a quantum leap - Page 11

So by "quantom leap" they really mean something that a 560Ti would be able to push? Nah, I'll be enjoying my DirectX 12 by then.
I don't get why everyone assumes consoles are cheaper! Console games are notoriously more expensive. I have both a PS3 and an XBOX, I added up how much I spent on PS3 and XBOX games as a total. Including the cost of the console, both of them, over the period of time that I've had them (since release), are way into £4000. If I also include HDTV's, the sheer amount of them I've had, compared to monitors over the years. Console gaming has just overtaken in terms of cost by a huge margin.

PC games are so cheap, and once you've bought them, you have them forever, and can play them 10 years later, 20 years later... My steam account contains 130 games, my physical game collection exceeds this, I have about 250-300 PC games (can't be bothered to count them). If I kept every console game I've ever had, I'd probably have way more than this, as consoles have only just caught up in terms of DLC (such as, demo's, expansions, add-ons etc..) rather than a £5 magazine from the shops that came out every week with demo's on, or screenshots etc... If I factored in all the magazines I used to buy including the £40 premium for games, and good old N64 days with £80 games (007 Goldeneye for example) furthermore, XBOX Live costs me a further £40 a year since it's release... It goes on and on and on.

All these hidden costs just make me absolutely furious. It's only until I recently gave up console gaming that I realised how much more money I had. MMORPG's replaced any game for at least 2 years for me. Consoles cannot compete with this, you play a game for 2 hours, get bored and want something new; instantly. Well I do anyway. Everyone is entitled to what they find fun obviously. So yes, I really don't understand this silly argument about cost. Smaller numbers on the outlay, don't mean a thing, especially since everyone purchases 50% of everything through finance anyway.

Saying that, my rig cost me £1800, this may seem steep, but compared to the consoles I have, the HDTV's... the amount of consoles (as they always break), I'm way over this amount already. Don't get me started on the Wii, I've had 3 of them. Kept selling them, until a new Zelda came out, and I had to experience it... Completed them and sold it again as it was just catching dust. Just like my PS3 and XBOX. It is totally unbelievable how ridiculously more expensive consoles are. I've owned over my liftime:

NES
SNES
Sega Master System
Sega Mega Drive
Super Nintendo
N64 Green
N64 Blue
PS1
PSOne Slim
PS2
PS2 Slim
PS3
PS3 Slim
XBOX (x2)
XBOX 360 (x3)
XBOX 360 slim
Gamecube
Dreamcast
Wii (x3)

The list goes on and on, I've had more, I just can't remember. If you add up the cost of all these, compared to a PC that has lasted me 3-5 years at a time... The cost comparison, is absolutely astounding. I can't be bothered adding it all up, as you get the picture. So seriously, I have no idea why people have this misconception of cost between both. Plus, when do you ever get steam deals on a console? 20 games for £30... Absolute bargain! £5 for Deus Ex etc... I've not paid full price for a PC game since pre-purchasing Guild Wars 2 a few months ago. I've had like 21 games for less than £40. Stick that in your console and RROD.

I'm a PC Gamer.....However consoles have their place and I enjoy them. I've had all those plus the Atari and intellevision. When you add the accessories, as well, you make an excellent point. I've never really thought of it that way.Very expensive.

What PC gamers miss is that the only difference between console and PC games today is filtering techniques, resolution and framerate. 95% of games use the exact same assets across all platforms. I'm glad you have Tri-SLI it's just a shame that development will never be catered towards it and most of what you're looking at is the exact same any guy with a 360 is going to be looking at.

A few games like Crysis 2 or Battlefield 3 bend this rule of asset parity a bit but not much. All you people hating on next-gen consoles need to realize that graphics development is not going anywhere without them and those four GPUs you have in your PC will continue to be completely useless aside from for forcing 8xSGSSAA.

I don't get it. I'd rather have the ability to play Uncharted 2 then any of that.

I was just providing an example of an experience that consoles could not provide. Based on your comment out of what I quoted before:

I'm not claiming that one is better than the other. Also, there is 3D.

Point is whatever game he is playing is likely availble on consoles. Same assets only difference is he is probabally using MSAA and has it set at a higher resolution.

If I was responding to my post I would point out some really cool mod. wink.gif

For me....Consoles are for a quick, jump in gaming fix. (not length of time, but depth)

PC's are for Total War, DCS A-10 or other simulations/strategy; overall, deeper gaming experiences.

I don't say this to be offensive, but consoles have, in general, a "shallower" gaming experience, for lack of a better word, overall.

But that's just me. I like em both. Depends on my mood.
