A single GTX 580 will last a very long time, hell at 8800gt can still run most games but on medium to low settings. Every person has a preference, as long as i can game at 1080p and in 3D with 60FPS i am happy. I will be updating when the next gen of cards come out which is a little ways away.

I think he only said that because he might be jealous of your rig being better than his?.... there is no way a GTX 580 will be outdated..or at least 4-5 years as TinDaDragon said.

you got a good system dont mind what he said

this. if you want to keep maxing out games at 1080p the 580 is going to start holding back to newer titles

Even a 5870 can play the newest titles at high-mid settings and thats a ~2 year old card. I'd say it obsolesce for the 580 is about 3 years, perhaps less with the new gen consoles.

The guy who told you that your card would be outdated in a few months, he's spot on. The 580 will be such a disappointment to you in a few months you'll literally be forced to buy a next-gen card from 3Dfx with new SLI scaling technology, prompting you to buy two cards and reap FPS like you've never seen before.

It'll be expensive and hard to swallow but that 580 is on it's last legs for sure.

580 is far from its last legs... what are you people smoking?? You can easily get another 3 years out of that card, bar some huge leap in development. Sure you may not be able to game at 120hz across 3 monitors running the newest AA at 8x, but you won't need to upgrade for a while. What I have done is buy a card, wait a year to 2 years, buy another and SLI or CF and once a single card comes out that can trash my CF or SLI setup I switch to that single card and start over.

Naw I'm pretty sure a couple 3Dfx cards (new cards coming out with new SLI tech) will kick the pants off the 580, especially in PCI slots. Way more power than ISA. Way faster.

i dont care if they will beat it, it seems like games cant possibly look better than Crysis 1 maxed out. The lowest frames i ever get are 60 on sr3 Ultra at stock 2500k.

i wanted to know if my gtx 580 can run games medium for the next months at least..

my friend said ill need to upgrade in months. Lol.

The GTX 580 will definitely be able to play games when the next generation of consoles comes out, so I would say that you would be required to upgrade two console gens down the line. The only exception to that might be a company like crytek doing a game just for the PC and giving it amazing graphics, but even then they will probably allow you to turn the detail down, like they always have.

Graphics haven't really been getting better significantly since the last console gen came out. It doesn't mean you shouldn't upgrade, however; I'm going for a GTX 670 (or 780) and 1440p as soon as my budget will allow it, then SLI 670 when I can afford that.

GTX 580 is slow by today's standard, LOL... I'm only kidding.
biggrin.gif
It's not a slow card. At least if you compare it to those newer mid range ATI & Nvidia cards. You won't be able to run graphic hungry games at full ultra high settings with it though. It's no GTX 670 or 680 but at least it's not obsolete yet. It will be in 1 to 2 years.

could u please tell me a game i cant max out right now please? i think you guys pay $1000 for cards, and dont know that a single gtx 580 from 2010 gets 70 fps on bf3 ultra and it has yet to dip below 45 fps on any game i have. ever.

Battlefield 3. I don't have the game but from what I've read, you can't run the game at ultra high setting with full AA, Vsync, etc. You have to lower down the visual enhancements a bet.

My experienced with video cards tells me that even with the fastest card, it's lucky to reach a 3 year lifespan without getting obsolete. I used to own (2) Sapphire Radeon 4870 X2dual GPU cards (quad CF). I bought the cards few months of its released (end of 2008 I think). By 2010 the cards mid range.

GTX 580 been awhile so it won't take long for it to get obsolete.

i just sold my two gtx 580 and bougth a single gtx 680.. NO PROBLEMS at all with my sli and already miss them

but here in venezuela those cards costs less and less every month, and i need the money to have the lastest lol . i know i lose some performance but anyway.. kinda happy, less power draw and less heat and noise

You sure have alot of posts for a troll account...Anyway back to the op, your gtx580 will most likely be good for another few years atleast around 5years. Not all games these days are dx11, guildwars2 is still going to be using dx9!!! my graphics cards are still a few generations behind and run most games still very well.(thinking of maybe upgrading hopefully to a gtx670/680 myself)

So dont worry about your 580 it should be good for a few years to come still, unless you are unhappy with its performance(lag, graphic tearing, low fps, ect ect), graphics cards are a huge money sink and only should be replaced when your no longer happy with how they perform.

And to your 2nd question which games are hardest for you try to max out right now, probably only 2 on the market such as

crysis 1 and metro2033

I know I can't come close to maxing Metro 2033 on my 480 at 1080p, and Crysis dips to 30FPS often. Those are the only games where I doubt you could not max them.

You only need anything more than a 480 if you are running1440p or are playing an incredibly intensive game, IMO.

i can v sync bf3 absolutely maxed out like a champ. I do not understand your guys logic? My gtx 580 runs bf3 at 2560x1600 at steady 35. i dont see how it will get outdated on my 1920x1080 when it rips through games. i can record and maintain the fps for crying out loud lol

?? the 480 is probably a lot worse then lol. my 580 performs superior to any benchmark i have seen. Those are probably made up. its Superclocked and it rips through everything. a 480 is a whole generation behind. thats like comparing a gtx 680 to a 580. i can record crysis and play it at 45 fps constant maxed out. Want to see vids? and its my sig rig.

I find it hard to believe that you can max out everthing with a very playable setting. GTX 580 is no GTX 680. Even the latter suffers visual tearing at ultra high setting with full AA & Vsync on 120 Hz monitor .

A stock GTX 680 is 25% more powerful than a stock 580 and the 580 a few months ago was considered the most powerful single gpu period before the 680 or 7970. A single 580 will easily max out BF3 and to be honest MSAA is almost useless now considering all the shaders that games use now. A single 580 is enough for a while at least two years.

No 580 maxes out BF3. In fact two 580's were recommended to play the game on 'Ultra' preset, which still isn't 'maxing out' the game. So...........................................

People's definitions of 'max' variable from card to card and game to game and setting to setting. 4xMSAA will be a max to some while 8xMSAA or 4xSSAA will be to another while still 16xAA will be to another. Not to mention AO and the various methods, and so on, and so on. So.....................

The one thing that most people can max out on almost all cards in the last six years is Anisotropic Filtering which does not require much extra work from a GPU, yet you still see comparisions of 4x, 8x, and 16x.

So..........

45FPS is to one what 30FPS is to another what 60FPS is to others and so on and so on.... So quit worrying, play your games at a level of detail you enjoy with a performance expectation you enjoy and stop worrying about whether or not the hardware will last. You live once. That you know of. So make the best of it.

If that's true then GTX 660Ti at it's introductions is also already on it's way out since it's just 7% faster and in a few games like Skyrim, Metro2033 substantially slower than GTX 580.
It's been 20th months since the GTX 580 was introduced but it has the potential to be the next " 8800GTX", meaning it'll have a really long life span in hardware terms.
