Pump Advice on New Build Please - Page 2

Part of the beauty of the MCP35X2 is you have 2 PWM pumps that work in harmony, so you don't have to (or need to) run the pumps at full speed the vast majority of the time. At 40% they have slightly better performance than a single D5 so only under extreme loads will they ramp up. It's better to have the ability to speed up when you need it than not, and it's always better to have more pressure/flow available just in case. Plus, should one pump fail, you are not SOL.

I'm running 2 of the MCP35x pumps in series hooked up to PWM. I can't hear them. They are more quiet than the 3X Scythe GT 1850s. thumb.gif

and I agree with nleksan that it is nice to know that if one pump fails you won't be SOL/DOA/FUBAR biggrin.gif

Thanks again, ordered the MCP35x2, heat sink, and fan.

I've fiddled with the FanXpert but have given up on that, as it looks like most other people have too. What do you use for the voltage/power control? Do you just use one of the channels on a fan controller? My previous I just let run direct 12v from the PSU with molex.

I appreciate the help. Got my Mountain Mod box today:)

Uh, looking at this, seems like I can but gotta watch out for the wattage! 36 Watts if I hook the pumps on one. Hmmm. Looks like I need to have a separate kind of "dimmer" switch....

>>edit doing more reading on this site... looks like I hook the pumps to the MB and use the PWM. Like I said in the beginning of the thread, I don't know anything about pumps...

>>2nd Edit - well, that's what the Swiftech instrux say... however, each pump pulls up to 18w, and the MB connector on my board says Max 12w per connector....grrrrrr....

>>>3rd Edit - Ok, read, read, read... I get it now. The pumps have Molex for power and the pwm connection for the board is just for speed control. So, I guess that means that I can hook that to a pwm fan controller as it is not juicing the pumps....hmmmm

I learned a lot today:)

You got it. Each pump has a tail that ends in a 4 pin molex and branches off with a 4 pin connector that is just for PWM. I soldered mine together so I could use a single PWM input. Power for the pumps comes right off the PS.

Thanks, also figured out, with some help, that I can set the pump speed (lower than 4500 rpm/pump) as appropriate in the bios as I'll be controlling the cooling pretty much with the speed of the fans. Excellent.
