I need more ram, but do I get triple channel or just go dual?

Need help deciding, should I run 4 sticks on my triple channel motherboard which is essentially

In the 3+1 triple channel configuration with 4 sticks, the first three sticks are interleaved together for full triple channel performance and the 4th stick gets tacked onto one of the other single channels. So, performance is not consistent across your entire memory space, however you get more total memory.

Triple channel is going to pull slightly better numbers in memory benchmarks over dual channel on the Nehalem, however I've run both of these setups and in any real world use and gaming you won't feel or see any differences.

I would run those 4 sticks in the dual channel configuration as its simpler and may be more consistent if you frequently use all of your memory.

or should I just buy a triple channel kit?

I'd like 12gb or 16gb, but whatever ram I buy I'd like to keep for haswell or possibly if I ever get a ivy bridge processor down the road..

anyone got any preference with these kits if I get 4 sticks?

Grab 3x of these:

If/when you upgrade to Ivy or something with dual/quad-channel, then just buy one more stick.

Yes, I render 1080p videos in sony vegas pretty often and it quickly uses almost all available memory without really taking more than 50% cpu usage with hyper threading on. I'd like to get more than 6gb I know that and getting just 8gb seems silly when the prices aren't much.

Did you miss my post? The 30nm Sammy RAM is what everyone is drooling over right now, and it's a great price. Gives you your 12GB in triple-channel now, and lets you bump up easily when the time comes for more.

hey I did miss it, I've heard great things about that ram maybe I should jump on it!

will it run well even though its not marketed as a "kit"?
I've run four sticks in various triple channel setups for quite a while on my EX-58-UD3Rs without issue. You may need to manually increase tRFC and command rate for the third channel, but it works fine.

Regarding the statement in the [h]ardforum quote. I'm not sure I agree that running four in dual would be best, but it's not possible on your setup regardless. Only the third memory channel has two DIMM slots, so the only way to run four DIMMs on that setup is 3+1.

Kit is irrelevant.

The only practical difference between single sticks and kits is that the kits have a tendency to be cheaper per GiB when sold together.

There are three 2x4GiB kits in my X58-UD5, two 3x4GiB kits in my ASUS P6TD, a three DIMM kit plus a single stick in my LGA-1155 board, and four individual sticks in my X58-UD3R.

There's no such thing as a "kit". Those are just marketing words to make it easier to buy them.

Get sticks with identical speeds/timings, and you're good. If the amount of sticks is divisible by 2 (2, 4, 6, 8), then you can run in dual or quad (4, 8) channel. If divisible by 3 (3, 6), then you can run in triple-channel. It's really that simple. thumb.gif

edit: obviously you need at least 4 sticks to run in quad
