Wireless adapter solution for my desktop?

Currently have my desktop wired via ethernet cable running throughout my house. Aside from a very thin wall, my desktop is maybe 40 feet away from where my modem is currently located.

On that note, I am wired directly into my netgear wireless modem which was supplied by my service provider. Now on the other hand, I have my old D-Link Dir-655 router which I currently not even utilizing.

I need to eliminate the cord, but at the same time I am an addicted gamer. I need a solution that doesn't cost me too much in terms of connection strength.

What are the better options for giving my desktop a good wireless connection without reducing my latency too much?
Whatever adapter I pick up, would it be better to utilize my router over my modem for my connection?

Thanks
