Mr Tenenbaum, 25, was found guilty of illegally downloading and distributing 31 songs in 2007.

A judge in Massachusetts ruled that the damages, set by a jury in 2009, had been fair.

Mr Tenenbaum was 16 years old when a letter was sent to his parents' home accusing him of illegal file-sharing.

He was asked to pay $5,250 (£3,319) for downloading seven songs. He claims he offered $500 (£316) which was all he could afford at the time, and it was declined.

And This is why everyone hates Hollywood.

If a song is around $0.99 each how can they fine him $5250?

Sure maybe charge them 2-3x the usual cost so $14 or $21 but $5k?

He offered $500 straight up which is already a crazy offer to be honest and then no legal fees would be involved.

This is why I hate music distributors.

EDIT: Now he owes $675k?! How the hell does that even pass as fair. US judges have a negative IQ I swear.

I don't think any record label would care about a few hundred thousand dollars. They are much more interested in establishing legal precedent.

but legal precedent would be, get sued, file bankruptcy. meaning. anyone they sued would get away scotfree.

EDIT: and if you think about it. say they do this to 100 people. even on the cheap they would be looking at $250k in attorney fees. say 50 people filed bankruptcy that would be 12.5 million lost. it would get to the point where it would be to costly to sue.

Exactly, and the damages are punitive and intended to scare off people from doing what he did (even if it doesn't work).
