Not trying to be mean, but what backwards part of the country did you live in?

Another problem is public schools don't teach kids about starting their business or basic economics. All they tell them is study hard and go to college so you can work for someone. A bigger joke is how they say go for whatever you like. Oh sorry your liberal arts degree can't get you a job above minimum wage.

Definitely.

Public education is a joke. I could have stopped going to school after 6th grade and been fine. Everything past 6th grade was pretty much useless crap that I have not, to this day, used. I graduated in 1992, by the way.

We did not have cell phones back then. We actually talked to each other face to face most of the time. Something that society is lacking these days. People can't handle reality anymore. Learn to cope, it will be the most useful thing you will ever know.

No one needs a cell phone, laptop or tablet for anything. They are purely luxury items. Any parent buying their child these items without making them earn it or pay for it themselves is doing a great disservice to their child and society as a whole.

feel under pressure
Hard to tell who are the parents and who are the children.
My parents gave me anything and everything I needed up until I was around 16. By then I wanted my own money and my own things and that's when I started working part time. Now the only thing they help me pay for is my cell phone bill. I got my first phone when I was a freshman in highschool and it was simply because I played football and my mom always wanted me to keep it with me if I ever needed a ride because practice let out early, we were at an away game, etc. Now Im 21 and work part time and am in my last year of college. I can understand it being peer pressure but you'll be hard pressed seeing me give a crap about what my kids peers/peer's parents are able to afford and provide them. My children will have all they need just as I have and they will have all the toys like I did too, but you best believe theyll know the value of a dollar before they ever get their grubby little paws on any of it.

Most parents must be pretty dumb, I have a smartphone, laptop, pay rent, pay for my college(don't get any grants unfortunately), and still manage to have 2 cars, a dirtbike and a snowmobile, and save some of my check from work.

That depends on the area you live in. Rent for me here can reach $2,500 without utilities. So parents are not dumb, some are just less fortunate than others. Children cost money, spoiled or not. Have 2 or 3 children, then see if you still can criticize them. The food bill alone would perhaps shock you into reality.

Just a 2 more weeks before heading back to WLU to me. One of the smallest campuses of any university. I can't wait to see how many douches proudly display Beats by Dre and macbooks.

To those that say they pay for it all themselves, hats off to you. As others have stated, geographic location, field of study, etc all have to be taken into account. Some schools cost much more, the housing around such schools cost much more. Not to mention social habits? Most of my old high school friends who got into university just drink, weekend and whenever. Always going to places just getting drunk. Others like to save and purchase things like cars, bikes, tech, etc.

There are even people who went to university, graduated, haven't found jobs yet but because they lived at home and did nothing else, they by now can afford semi decent cars like mazda 3, infinity G37, etc.

Who has the better life? Save for car and no social life? Have social life but not much else? Decisions decisions...

Just depends on the lifestyle you want to live.
