[Yahoo] Peer pressure adds to the rising cost of back to school for parents - Page 9

The amount of kids I see at school with Beats is staggering. Same goes for 12yo's with iThingies. No one really has anything beyond that though. It's also a small chunk of my generation that seems to feel the need to give in to this peer pressure. I have a tablet, but only because it was a fire sale HP TouchPad that was my one and only birthday present. When my HTC Desire died, my parents replaced it, but they told me a limit of $100 and no more. My parents expect me to work for my things (a bit unfairly though, because I get $30/month for chores and I'm not allowed to get a job). Same goes for my friends (except they all have jobs lol)

I'm 23 and the only phone I have is the family house phone.. I really never saw the need for a cell phone. If I'm not home, then its either I'm already with the people I would be talking to or I simply don't want to be bothered while I'm the store. In high school I never had a laptop either. Just a desktop. Now in college I'm still rocking a desktop for all my work and using a pen and paper to take notes on. I find it easier and quicker to use a pen and paper rather than a laptop. Plus, its less distracting.

To a certain extent I could see why parents would want to give their kids cell phones. They are great for emergencies and checking up on them when they are out of the house. But smart phones? Tablets? They are going to be nothing more than a distraction while they're at school and a liability because they are probably going to get lost, stolen, or broken. Kid's don't need a $300 smartphone to call home. Let alone they don't need to be browsing the web or even listening to music while they're in class. Tablets is just a fad and pointless to use. Even for school work...

I dont understand why do you need a laptop for school. Write down the notes and etc.(helps you remember too). Or even if you need ed for presentation etc, get a cheaper core2 duo laptop. Do you need hyperthreading for powerpoint? Do your project on a awesome rig at home.

Eh, for those of us who were/are on campus for 12+ hours a day, a laptop was/is a blessing (especially if not living on campus). I can type faster than most anyone can write, can supplement digital notes with paper notes, and can rewrite later if need be. I can also quickly search something previously mentioned or check references online. More relevant to me in particular, I didn't have (and couldn't afford) an awesome rig at home; my laptop WAS the rig at home once I plugged in the keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

In this application, smart phones and tablets would be fairly useless.

Judging by the first few posts I don't even have to read the thread to know that it's probably people going on and on about how they don't have cell phones, facebook, laptops, gps, any sort of technology aside from a computer, etc. and how they walk uphill in the snow 5 times a day. Close?

I'd use a laptop for notes but it's almost impossible when you're an engineering major because it's hard to type equations, formulas, and drawings.

Not even remotely. Maybe you should read instead of passing judgment.

I used to look words up in a dictionary when I didn't know them, or how to spell them. Now google and spell check are responsible for half the "knowledge" and correct spelling/grammar in the world.
Teachers used to turn spell check off at my school to encourage students to learn to spell before they skipped the learning phase.

Yep, looks like I was right. I'm out.

Nothing wrong with that.

I did all of my unrestricted reasearch on a socket 775 that I could just wipe clean if it got infected. This was my "dedicated malicous browser" rig.For classes that needed a lot of writing, again a socket 775 came into play. For CCNA classes I used 2 rigs for looking things up,1 rig for practice Packet Tracer and a final rig for my finished product Packet Tracer labs (all socket 1366).Is a smart phone required? I say no, but a laptop is better (at least for me) to take notes on (and that Wikipedia lookup to score points from the instructor with).I would say a printer and a backup printer is smart. When I was heavy into routing research I did buy 2 internet connections for a while. The second came in handy for home hosting a web site also.Home hosting is good as a learning tool but it is not pratical.
