[Yahoo] Peer pressure adds to the rising cost of back to school for parents - Page 10

when I was in high school if you were caught texting, or had your ipod out in class, it would be taken away by the teacher, alot of the time you would need a parent signature to pick it up, it would usually end up lost or stolen if you waited until the next day, saw that stuff happen all the time... in college anyone can take notes with a laptop or tablet, do they allow that stuff in high school now? it seems counter productive, kids would be watching youtube videos or playing games instead of taking notes.

I put myself through school. My senior year I finally got a smart phone because I was working enough that I could afford it. I could have easily gotten by without a desktop while at school with the computer labs and what not, but I did bring my desktop with. I saw kids with iPads, laptops and a whole lot of other devices and more often than not you saw solitaire, Facebook or something that wasn't needed on the screen. I am not trying to say that they cannot be useful, but most people didn't use them in ways to their benefit. So to me parents spending money that they may or may not have to provide these things to their children is not necessary and just another sign of how the modern generation is all about image and not practicality.

Because of the stupid credit system, I'm not able to take on my own expenses. While my mom has put my new laptop, books, and some tuition on her back, I made the promise that I would remove the burden as soon as possible. I'm already on the job hunt, and doing web design side jobs. I hate the idea of her taking on my debt.

and on-topic, I still use a 2007 MacBook Pro that cost me like $1200 to buy, and I will keep using it till it breaks for work. You don't need anything fast to write documents and browse the internet

I have to get smart phones for 10 and under kids all the time. I just don't personally get it :/.

Moving this thread onto how I approve of hitting your kid for discipline.

PC that I bought with my own money is all I've got. I'm glad my Parents have so far raised me well, It's not that hard to friends and actually hang out with them. Most kids need to learn respect and that their parents do already enough for them without having to put the family in debt because of the kid's wants.
If the kids are bad then it means the parents are at fault. I hope one day that there is no bull like this, if it is still there then that means at the very least I can raise my children so they have respect and see how to think for themselves and go beyond influences.
My brother is getting bugged all the time of why he does not have a Cell-phone by his friends, he still hangs out with them and talks with them.

I really dislike the majority of kids these days, it is absurd that a Parent would put their family in debt just to give the children what they WANT.

You can't blame the kids, though.

Every kid is going to want the newest item on the market. The thing everyone else has. I did, you did, we all did. It has been like this since the dawn of civilization.

What we actually need, however, is what our parents must decide.

It's the dumb parents who spoil their kids and get their 10 year old a smartphone with a $80 a month plan, that they don't need, but want...
