I completed the off axis measurements with the new waveguide and it's a winner smile.gif

+/- 30 degrees within a couple of dB is pretty good.

I've been thinking about the design, maybe something like this sketch if I can make it:

In the sketch it's 140mm wide and 200mm tall. Then with some small stands to bring them up to ear height. I could possibly place the crossover and amplifier in the stands.

Next I will try make some simple test cabinets to see how it behaves. I haven't optimized the driver placement yet, it will have a lot of influence on the frequency response.

Some considerations on whether to use active or passive crossover (there are more complex considerations, but these are the main ones)

Passive crossover: (crossover components are between amplifier output and speaker drivers)

Pro:
  • Speakers can be used with any amplifier.

Con:
  • Quality (expensive) crossover components are a must, gets very expensive with complex/high order crossovers.
  • A simple crossover can easily cost $30-50 per speaker.
  • Size: low resistance air core inductors and good capacitors are large.
  • Some efficiency is lost in the crossover.

Active Crossover: (crossover is done on low level signal between source and amplifier)

Pro:
  • Can be implemented with standard and reasonably cheap components.
  • Amplifiers got direct control of the drivers without anything in between other than a piece of wire.
  • Easy to do high order crossovers.
  • No efficiency loss in the crossover.
  • Driver impedance variations will not affect the crossover.

Con:
  • One amplifier channel needed per driver, so 2 way means amplifier channels for a set.
  • Cannot be used with just any amplifier as one channel is needed per driver.
  • Needs extra power supply for the crossover.

I have started work on a test cabinet, acrylic, my favorite material at the moment smile.gif

ive always been interested in making my own Speakers , im trying to find a straight foward tutorial like : buy this this and that , solder this in here and there , put them in an enclosure , ??? , success

i dont care how much the hardware cost , as long as its made by me and it sounds better than some comparable speakers ( the total amount of cash i spent versus some other of equal value)

can i find something like that , because i have some cool housing ideas i want to make biggrin.gif

This is awesome...you appear to have some legit experience/equipment. I'm very interested to see where this goes...good luck to you sir.

Props man! Wish I knew how to do half of this stuff , I'm currently saving up to buy a new sound system for my card so hopefully I learn some of this stuff when I get down to working on it. Really want to get more into audio, just ordered myself a pair of ATH-M50s so it's a start lol

I find it fun to build speakers. There are many good kits available in all sizes and price ranges. I'd be happy to point you in some direction if you have some ideas on what size and price range you are looking for smile.gif

Thanks smile.gif .. I've build a few speakers, some great and some not so good biggrin.gif .. but generally they get better the more experience I gain. One experience I've gained is that it's impossible to design good speakers without some equipment to measure.

Nice headphones. Audio is a fun hobby, but easy to spend a ton of money when you get into it smile.gif .. there is always something better or slightly different.

Awesome project. I have a bunch of questions as well. How much of the enclosure will be acrylic and how much will be MDF? Are you adding any sound dampening to the interior? What about vent placement? Great job so far.
