if i plan to get the 8800gtx but only play at 1280x1024 with all eyecandy enabled, do i need a new cpu or are times changing where the videocard takes most of the load?

I'm going to say you'll be fine playing at that Res with everything enabled. As it does outperform sli/crossfire setups in most games/res's. Depending on what game it is you'll probably beable to up the resolution.
