Sony KDL-55HX850, noticeable improvement from a rear projection?

Thread Starter
I am thinking about getting that Sony TV because I've always been interested in LED and it seems to be at a decent price as of now. Currently I've had a Samsung hl50a650 rear projection for about 5 years now I believe. Although it runs hot, uses up a lot of electricity, the picture isn't horrible. Albeit I haven't seen other HDTVs in quite some time.

Would you guys say the Sony LED is a $2000 improvement? Or is the picture quality not that much different and I should just get a cheaper LED or Plasma. Thanks.

having both rear projection and led (both sony) led all the way (until something better arrives)
but 2000?!
i am still amazed by the clarity and superior viewing angles
btw after reading reviews on my current model inside is either sharp or samsung panels which could explain the better than sony quality (lol)
it uses sony's xmb menu system which is kinda laggy and i don't care for (not even on ps3)
overall i am very happy

Yeah I say 2000 because its on sale for 2,400 or so. How are sports on a LED? Hopefully I will only have to use menu to setup picture settings heh.

Here is a link to the CNET review for the hx850. http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/sony-kdl-55hx850/4505-6482_7-35118056.html.

Besides the Sharp Elite and the older Sony HX929 it is the best LCD of the year. It's a really nice LCD. Plasma is better for motion but Sony has one of the better motion interpolation systems so sports should look really good.

With that budget you should be able to find a 46"hx929 on amazon which is a fully backlit LED tv. The HX850 is only edge lit but it is done very well.

It will be a big improvement over your current tv and for your budget is one of the best LCD's you could get.

Also for $2,000 you should just be able to get the panasonic 55" vt50 which is the best plasma panasonic has ever made and is there top of the line tv. I just got one and it is amazing.

It depends on wether or not you want LCD or plasma.

For a lot of gaming I would suggest a LCD because this years panasonics have more image retention issues then years past. But a plasma will give you the best picture for watching movies especially in a light controlled room. The black levels are insane on this years panasonics.

Cool thanks! I do a lot of sports gaming with xbox, and watch a lot of sports. Been reading good things on the Panasonic. Saturdays and sundays I'll watch football all day, do you think a plasma will be at risk for image retention from the scoreboard?

Ya I do. I am kinda worried about it myself. I watch a lot of football and baseball. It's just that the panasonic is so good I couldn't help but get it. people say you should break them in first by watching full screen content with no logos and the chance of image retention will be less.

Also CNET did a burn in test and found the samsung plasmas are not as bad as panasonic. if you have to go with a plasma and are worried about IR then Samsung would be better but there black levels aren't as good. Also the Samsungs are cheaper and come with 3d glasses.

The last tv I had was a edge lit LED lit LCD and in the dark the picture was terrible so I went with a plasma this time. I am worried about IR but I am just going to be very careful. To me the picture quality is worth it.

I would check out the Samsung and Panasonic plasmas side by side in Best Buy and see which you like better. If the Samsung is close in picture quality to your eyes then go with the Samsung because you will not have to worry about Image Retention.

CNET left a static image on the Samsung Plasma overnight and it went away completely.

I would suggest going to avsforums. That's where the best info is. There is a owner's thread for all these tv's. Some people even think the Samsung has a sharper picture. It all comes down to personal preference.
