Bigadv folding questions

Thread Starter
Hey veteran folders, I got a few questions.

1. What is the PPD like on a i7 920? At stock and at 4.0Ghz?
2 Are folders relying on bonus SMP points?
3. Would it require 24/7 Folding? I won't be able to do that.
4. Does it involve Linux, VMmare or something? Extensive setup?

Thanks, rep to good, full answers.

bigadv is no longer available to any cpu with less than 16 cores, you could use the corehack, but you would not be able to finish the unit in time

1. I dunno, sorry, not familiar with the numbers on that chip.
2. yes, you just need a passkey and fold 10 work units and then start gettin free extra points, so why not
3. first sentence. though 24/7 gets you better street cred biggrin.gif just fold what you can
4. folding in linux, whether in vm or native install, will give you a better output than would be possible in windows. native install is the most productive. there are plenty of guides around here to help with either setup, and it can be done fairly easily.

1) ~4.5k PPD on an 8101, 17-20k PPD on regular smp
2) yes PPD would be crappy otherwise (see answer to Q1)
3) yes, but even with 24/7 folding it would be impossible for a Bloomfield to complete them in time
4) bigadv are only assigned in linux, whether it is native or in a VM does not matter. Native is best for PPD though

Just do regular smp units on that i7. Btw, try to finish the units as soon as possible. Keeping an unfinished WU in queue is really bad for PPD since the bonus will keep ticking away.

What is the PPD like without bonuses? I don't like folding on Fermi GPU3. I'm trying to reach one million points in a reasonable amount of time.
I might consider getting an i7 if it's worth the PPD.

Folding without bonus might take you about a year and a half to reach 1 mil on an i7 920 @ 4GHz. Why do you want to fold without bonus though?

I'm asking hypothetically since I have zero idea on how the bonus points work other than 10+ units with a passkey. No idea on the bonus points loss rate. Per day?

Oh, okay. You first fold 10 units and get bonus on all of your next units with that passkey. Bonus is assigned if you finish the WU before you hit the preferred deadline. Since you won't be able to do that with an i7 930 on bigadv you get the base points which are really low. The regular SMP units can be done easily by that CPU and will give you 700-900% of the base points if you have bonus enabled.

For example if I fold a 6099 on my 2600K, my base points would be 1588 credit. This is what I get if I fold without a passkey or one that has no bonus enabled yet or if I passed the preferred deadline of 8 days. Realistically I can do 6099 within 9h45min and will get between 15.5k and 16k on that unit instead of 1588 base points. So this means that I get about 14-14.5k bonus on top of the base points.

Thanks for the thorough explanation! Right now, I'm folding on a Q6700 at 3.3Ghz producing about 6943PPD. Seems pretty legit. I'll wait til the bonus PPD and see what's what from there.

That's probably calculated with bonus. My Q9550 does about 5k PPD at stock while running streaming programs, so that PPD is looking good for a Q6700 @3.3

What project are you folding right now (number)?
